About the Author

Not For Tourists is the ultimate guide for the savvy city-dweller. Our philosophy is simple: Whether you've lived in your neighborhood for 55 years or 55 minutes, NFT will help you navigate and explore the city like a local. Written and designed by in-the-know city slickers themselves, NFT is mobile-oriented, cartographically-inclined, and to-the-point. For over a decade, our cabal of mapmakers, writers, editors, graphic designers, and urban adventurers have scoured the streets, read the writings, and lived the credos of practical, esoteric city travel. Within the matte black covers of our guides, discover secret city spots you never knew existed—from dive bars and extravagant restaurants to local hardware stores and abandoned buildings (we don't judge).

In terms of information about NYC...restaurants, places to visit, transit options, parks, nightlife, etc. this little book is great. They are able to cram in more useful information about NYC than most other guidebooks I've seen. It's very comprehensive too since it includes the outer boroughs besides Manhattan. In many ways, it's all you need to carry with you while you're in NYC. The maps are terrific and nicely detailed with pertinent information. One big negative is that the information is very, very difficult to read. You need a magnifying glass to be able to read the information; the typeface is much too tiny. I think the same information with larger typeface would make this book the #1 book to have when traveling/living in NYC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Info...If You Can Read It., December 15, 2009

Just bought the 2010 Guide. Lots of great detailed information. I also appreciate that they steer you away from overrated locations. HOWEVER, the paperback guide in like pt. 5 font. I'm sitting here reading it with a magnifying glass (not easy). For $17, don't we deserve a little more paper?

I bought this book for my sister, who is a student living in NYC. She's lived there for about 4 months (with my other sister has lived there for 3.5 years) so she's definitely not a tourist, but neither is she a native New Yorker. We tried to use this book when I came up for a visit. I'm not sure why they list every Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks in each neighborhood. I'm pretty sure that locals already know and/or don't care where those places are. Seems like something tourists would want to know. I was surprised at places that were left out, including a few places to eat and shop, which I thought would be appealing to locals. Also, the maps assume the reader is intimately familiar with all of the streets in each neighborhood. NYC is a big city, so while one can be a local in one neighborhood, I'm sure even long-time New Yorkers don't know where every street in the city is. A grid on the map would have made things easier, or numbering each of the places of interest.

So while I hope this book is useful to sis, I don't think it's going to be the resource I thought it was. Thankfully, I also got her Off the Beaten (Subway) Track Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions, which I think would be much more interesting to locals than the NFT guide.
