Book Description

Not For Tourists Guidebooks November 18, 2009
Not for Tourists Guide to Boston 2010, half anti-guidebook, half urban manual, is the ultimate little black book. It reveals everything from where to find the most charming architecture and impressive cultural landmarks, to where to get the best pizza and catch a movie, or simply where to go for the most impressive view of Beacon Hill and Back Bay. Whether you've called Boston your home for decades or just arrived last night, you ignore at your peril this new 2010 edition with its caustic neighbourhood summaries and refreshing, politically incorrect descriptions. Meticulously researched and written by folks who actually live there, NFT presents the city along with its good, its bad and its downright hideous. In over 300 pages of glorious content, the pocket-sized survival handbook features simply everywhere, from Central Boston to Dorchester and Southwest, also covering all the city's infamous colleges and universities. Designed for street-savvy locals, commuters, business travellers, and yes, tourists, NFT Boston includes a highly graphical map for every neighbourhood (and college campus) featured. User-friendly map icons highlight everything from coffee shops, supermarkets, landmarks, liquor stores, banks and libraries, to hardware stores, gas stations, gyms, pharmacies and even donuts! So if you're meeting friends in an unfamiliar part of the city or find yourself off the beaten track, NFT is a must-have resource. But NFT doesn't waste your time by serving up five zillion options just because they're in a database: contributors have gone back to eat, drink, dance and shop their way through last year's listings to check that they're still worth knowing.

About the Author

Not For Tourists is the ultimate guide for the savvy city-dweller. Our philosophy is simple: Whether you've lived in your neighborhood for 55 years or 55 minutes, NFT will help you navigate and explore the city like a local. Written and designed by in-the-know city slickers themselves, NFT is mobile-oriented, cartographically-inclined, and to-the-point. For over a decade, our cabal of mapmakers, writers, editors, graphic designers, and urban adventurers have scoured the streets, read the writings, and lived the credos of practical, esoteric city travel. Within the matte black covers of our guides, discover secret city spots you never knew existed—from dive bars and extravagant restaurants to local hardware stores and abandoned buildings (we don't judge).

4.0 out of 5 stars A year later and I still find it useful., July 22, 2011

This review is from: Not for Tourists Guide to Boston 2010 (Not For Tourists Guidebooks) (Paperback)
I bought this book based on a friend's recommendation before I moved to Boston last year. It helped me get around and find things I needed--anything from a post office and laundromat to restaurants and movie theaters. I don't have the internet on my phone, so I can't search Google for things when I'm out and about. This book is full of maps that are easy to read, and they're divided by neighborhood. It's durable, small and easy to carry. There is a street index, so if you're not sure where you are or where you need to go, you can quickly find out which map to look at. In the back is detailed information about area colleges, parks/outdoor activities, restaurants and nightlife, shopping, concert/theater venues...pretty much everything you could possibly need or want. There is a fold-out map in the back that shows subway lines and major roads. I would prefer it if this map showed more side streets, but that's really the only complaint I have. It definitely helped me become acquainted with a new place in which I knew nobody.

2.0 out of 5 stars not distinguishing itself from yelp!, December 28, 2009

2010 version has hardly been updated since 2009. A restaurant that changed it's name since 2009 is now in the 2010 version as 2 different restaurants @ the same address. In the age of yelp & google maps, NFT has to do alot more to distinguish itself. Strangely, they blog 2x a week about new local restaurants, and they do a great job of finding the small hole-in-the-walls, but none of that content made it into the 2010 edition.
