"I spoke to your teacher, Mr. Hollinsworth, this morning," Mary Beth announced as soon as Tess had perched on the edge of a seat.

"You did? But it's Sunday."

"I called him at home," Mary Beth explained. "And he urged me to offer you a full scholarship. He said you are a very bright girl who could benefit from a superior Sutton education. And I'm convinced that you'd be a great addition to our team. Especially after we get you in top-notch condition."

"Thank you," Tess said.

"Take one week to think about it," Mary Beth said.

"I don't need a week."

"No?"

No, and I don't want one either, Tess thought. That would just give me seven whole days to chicken out.

"I'd love to come," Tess told Mary Beth, sounding much more certain than she felt. Why shouldn't you be certain? Tess asked herself. Unlike the Stars, Mary Beth took soccer seriously. What more did she need to know?
