A magnificent vocal treat,
By
This review is from: Toutes Les Femmes En Moi (Audio CD)
In her first album as a vocalist (as opposed to a singer/songwriter), Lara Fabian hits all the right notes with a set of gorgeous renditions of well-known French songs from singers who have been personally meaningful to her in her life. Often introduced on French TV as the finest French singer in the world, her vocal talents are on full display here, with her customary great range, a moderate emotional intensity, crystal clarity and superb phrasing. The background instrumentation is primarily charged with setting the structure and letting Lara perform, which puts her strongest talents to fine use; an accompanying chorus occasionally adds icing to the cake. Given the quality of the songs, the album is strong throughout - there is not a weak entry among the 13 (a 14th, Babacar, is available for download on commercial sites). Purists be warned that Lara has chosen to remake some of these songs in a different, up-to-date fashion, including R'n'B components. Also don't miss the letters Lara addresses to each of the singers whose work she uses - very open, informative, and moving. As is well-known, Pascal Negre, the president of Universal Records, encouraged Lara to produce this album this way. A good decision; all in all, a top notch release.

Wonderful album,

Wonderful album, very moving and emotional. Personal favorite songs are, Göttingen, Il venait d'avoir 18 ans, Mamy blue, Toutes les femmes en moi and Nuit magique.
I personally prefer when Lara sings her own songs, then again with the kind of voice she has, it doesn't matter what she sings, and these songs are hits so she's given them second life. Hope there is going to be a Live version of this album. I'm sure not only her fans, but also people who love the originals, will enjoy this album. The sound is different but very smooth and emotional. Lara you are the greatest!

Lacking the emotional amplitude she is capable of,

This review is from: Toutes Les Femmes En Moi (Audio CD)
The most beautiful and emotive female voice in the world is not at its best in this album. The songwriter (Lara did not -- unlike with other albums -- write her own stuff here) does not have the sense of drama that and emotion that Lara has. The songs tend toward a sort of French intellectual "jazzy" kind of easy rhythm. It is not my taste nor is it a match for what is within Lara. It is as if she picked up a random book of songs and sang them; there is no emotional amplitude.
Lara, please bring back the passion. Sweep us off our feet and carry us to the empyrean heights that you can.
