5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PRODUCT! November 27, 2012

I recently started drinking The Macallan single malt Scotch. While looking at merchandise on their website, I found an ice sphere press and wanted one immediately. The problem is the price tag. The one sold by Macallan is 650 Euro which by todays exchange rates will cost you about $843. All other brands of ice sphere presses I've found ranged from $500-$1,500. I thought there had to be a better option and then I found these.

These ice sphere molds work perfectly. Use as directed and you will achieve a clear practically perfect 2.5" sphere of ice each time. Durable and well contructed from food grade materials. You'll get clearer ice if you use filtered or boiled water. If prefered, you can even add fruit and stuff into the molds for presentation.

This morning, I used 2 spheres to chill a very large cafe latte. I would normally fill almost the entire glass with regular ice and then have to add more ice half way through cause it melted. These spheres worked perfectly. Hardly any dilution of my espresso and by the time I finished there were still 2 resonably large ice spheres in my glass that I could have continued to use in a refill. These things are just brilliant! I have no idea why anyone would ever spend $500-$1500 for a press when they could have these. These are perfect to chill your liquor or any beverage you prefer to not become diluted.

Someone rated this product at 2 stars. If you actually read their review you'll understand that the person is an idiot. If the 2.5" ice sphere doesn't fit your glass, use a different glass. If you don't want your beverage to splash, put the ice in first. It's just common sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ice Spheres May 3, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This product does what it says it does, making 2" ice spheres. They work very well for scotch or any whiskey drinkers as well as shaker cocktails, as it cools the liquid in a rocks glass without diluting your drink because of the less surface area of the sphere opposed to regular cubes. It can be a little frustrating when making at first, sometimes the tops pop off alittle and can cause more egg shaped ice. I would recommend either using distilled water or boiling filtered water once or twice as you'll get clearer spheres and better results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection! June 8, 2012
By TJ
These molds actually work! Perfect sphere for my vodka rocks - finally, my vodka doesn't get watered down. I can usually get 3 cocktails out of one ice sphere also. A side note, I bought this set for $11.95 at Sur de la Table - online they are $10.95 at Sur. Worth the $.

The Tovolo Sphere ice molds are hard to beat for the price. They arrive packaged well with decent instructions printed on the box. Anybody who has grown up with Tupperware will know how to use them right out of the box. I ordered (2) sets to start with and have since ordered more not only for me and the wife; but have sent them as gifts to other single malt drinkers as well.

Rather then sit here and describe them....instead here are some tips to get them to perform:

1. Use distilled water -- if you want clear ice and no taste except the whiskey in your glass. Some people say purified or tap water is fine; but I have found that the ice still comes out with impurities and irregularities everytime I use anything other than distilled water.

2. The "fill" line on these are kind of funny. The fill line is not the line that you see going around the mold; but is instead just about to the top of the oval line that you will see on the inside as you pour the water in. Don't worry, once you see them you will understand what I am talking about.

3. When running "warm" water over the mold to take out the ice -- Read carefully! Run your warm water over the soft silicone lid first and most (the dark colored part) because it just takes a little longer to get the soft silicone to release than it does the hard plastic part of the mold.

4. When running the "warm" water over the silicone lid -- Take care not to just let the water run into the hole for expansion in the top of the lid. If you do you will create a hole inside your ice sphere.

5. MOST IMPORTANT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great after I figured out a system. February 8, 2013

Overall I'm pleased with these molds and have had good results. I've experimented with food coloring and flavored water. My guests have been impressed by them.

It took me several tries before I figured out the best way to get the frozen sphere out of the mold. What works for me is to run
the plastic (bottom) part of the mold under hot water until I can free the sphere with the rubber top attached. Then I can usually easily remove the sphere from the top without touching it very much. In my experience if I take the top off first, I then have trouble getting the sphere out of the mold. If you touch the sphere too much in trying to free it, the heat from your hand may cause it to crack. Same thing with getting water on it directly. Also I generally need add water past the fill line in order to fill the mold and not have a flat spot at the top of the sphere.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting
They work as advertised. Sometimes it is tough to get the ice released from the mold after freezing, but they work well, and the ice sphere is a definite conversation piece.
