The creative folks at Tovolo have come up with the latest way to make food prep fun-kitchen utensils that stand upright. Each Standz tool features an ergonomic, soft-grip handle with a flat base measuring 1-1/2 inches in diameter, allowing it to stay upright on the countertop for several reasons: to eliminate germ transference between counter and tool, to keep drips and food particles off the counter, and to provide for quick grabbing. A cheerful complement to the handsome graphite-gray handle, the head of each tool is made of translucent polycarbonate in a bright color range, making the tool easy to find should it end up in a cluttered drawer.
The swiveling 18/10 stainless-steel blade on the tropical-green Tovolo Standz julienne peeler features one smooth side and sharp teeth on the other that slice a carrot, potato, or other food item into long, thin strips. Julienne, or "matchstick," strips are a great way to add garnish or zest to a salad, casserole, or dessert. A sharp knob on the side of the polycarbonate head can be used to dig eyes out of a potato or blemishes out of fruit. To julienne carrots, you have to press very firmly. If you do it right, the results are great. It's nice that it stands on its own and you don't have to lay it on your counter top.

Makes Shreds, not Julienne Strips,

This gadget seemed like a good idea and a handy one to add to my kitchen tools, but it doesn't really make julienne strips which are like match sticks. I tried it on a carrot, and it produced long very fine strips which did not resemble julienne strips but looked more like long strands of finely shredded carrot. It didn't work that great on zucchini either. Most of the strips were ragged and uneven. I also thought it was awkward to use and basically useless and potentially hazardous on an item that is not as wide as the blade on the peeler. I thought this would work well when I needed a small amount of julienne strips for a quick stir fry, but the strips come out to thin to be of much use for a stir fry. I do not recommend this item for making julienne strips. If you need julienne strips, use a mandoline or sharp knife.
