Book Description

January 25, 1995
As James Beane states, the curriculum in many schools today is "disconnected, fragmented, and incoherent"--an observation that led the writers to document their search for ways to make the curriculum meaningful in the lives of students and to prepare them for the 21st century.

The 18 contributors--professors, administrators, and classroom teachers--discuss their experiences in answering the question of what an educated person should be; looking for large themes to integrate the curriculum, both within and among subjects; including diverse cultures; working toward broad goals and standards; using authentic assessments; and involving the concerns of students. Commentaries include cautions on today's fiscal realities.

Authors include Andrew Ahlgren, Michael Apple, Ernest Boyer, Beverly Cross, Maxine Greene, Willard Kniep, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Joan Palmer, William Schubert, Stephen Tchudi, and Grant Wiggins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeking connections, May 27, 2000
This review is from: Toward a Coherent Curriculum (1995 ASCD Yearbook) (Paperback)
This book provides the reader with an array of diverse perspectives on the concept of coherence in curriculum. In many of the chapters examples of how certain communities approached the issue are explained in well illustrated operative terms. There are also chapters devoted to the theoretical aspects of coherence and incoherence in curriculum. I found that this book connects well to James Beane's Curriculum Integration and writings by L. Thomas Hopkins such as his Integration: Its Meaning and Application. These works also connect well to writings by Arthur Combs, Earl Kelly, and Carl Rogers. What is so remarkable about this 1995 ASCD Yearbook are the diverse perspectives offered by notables such as James Beane, Maxine Greene, Grant Wiggins and others. While the perspectives are diverse the voices speak in harmony.
