To inifinity and beyond.,
By L. Marlin (Cleburne, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toward a Deeper Meditation (Paperback)
I almost didn't buy this book because I read the three star review. I was really interested in meditation so I decided to give it a whirl anyway, and I'm really glad I did. The technique is outlined in the beginning of the book (Chapter one, Santuary), and again in the last two chapters. I found the technique to be clearly explained and not difficult to do. As the book says, it takes practice to master. In the meantime time the rest of the information in the book was a wealth of information to back up the belief that meditaton does indeed connect you to the source of all direction and that there are many paths all leading to the same place. The one in this book works well for me. I am impressed with the book and with the results, I give it five stars.

It's a great history book, however it doesn't show many meditating techniques,

This review is from: Toward a Deeper Meditation (Paperback)
I have given this book a 3 because more then half the book talks about the history of meditation, rather then ways of achieving a deeper meditation.
The beginning chapters talk about the benefits of meditation and some techniques to help with it. The middle chapters is the history of meditation for the most part; and the third part is a little more technique to help put you in the state of meditation. If the authors goal was to make you understand the origin of meditation to help you get a better meditation, then I failed him and did not get a "deeper" meditation. All in all, even though he didn't help me achieve my desired goal for meditation, he did give me a good history lesson and also has given me a better understanding of the concept of meditation. I think this was his goal all along, it's just that the title fooled me into thinking otherwise. If you asked me the title should have been named just "The history and concept of meditation" but thats just me... Would I recommend this book to achieve a deeper meditation? depends, if knowing meditation's history and the concept of meditation would help you achieve a better meditation, then I would get it; otherwise, no, it sure didn't work for me. Would I recommend this book overall? Yes I would. It gives you a wonderful understanding of how many peoples have used this technique and all of the benefits of it. I believe it has great knowledge in it, plus a cheap tag for all of the great info in it. I gave it a three because it was not the reason I bought the book to begin with. I wanted to know ways to achieve a deeper state of meditation, thus the name. But it didn't do this. If your goal for this book is similar to mine, then I would warn you not to get this book. God bless everyone |
