Book Description

“I learned that it is faith that decides whether something will happen or not.” At the age of eight, Kaká already knew what he wanted in life: to play soccer and only soccer. He started playing in front of his friends and family, but when he suffered a crippling injury, doctors told him he would never play again. Through faith and perseverance Kaká recovered, and today he plays in front of thousands of fans every year. As the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year and winner of the Ballon d’Or, this midfielder for Real Madrid has become one of the most recognized faces on the soccer field.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Kaká is one of Brazil’s top soccer players. Currently playing for Real Madrid, he made his reputation with AC Milan. Unlike players who cultivate a tough-guy image, Kaká is deeply and openly religious and supports numerous humanitarian causes. Jones covers all of this, along with Kaká’s years in the extensive Brazilian player-development system, while interspersed sidebars delve into related subjects, such as why Brazilian players are often known by just one name. More pictures and descriptions of game action would have been welcome, and the biography occasionally becomes bogged down by mundane facts and redundancy; for example, Kaká’s unprepossessing disposition is mentioned with almost distracting frequency. Still, this is a solid, well-rounded effort, and with this being a World Cup year, players such as Kaká will undoubtedly receive more American media attention, creating a high demand for this and other similar biographies. Grades 5-8. --Todd Morning

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeping his eyes on the real victory. August 16, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is the true story of soccer star Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, a.k.a. Kakĺ. What is unique and interesting about Kakĺ is his strong Christian faith. Unlike most of today's popular sports figures, he is someone that everyone can look up to. Not that he is perfect, but he tries to live a humble Christian life.

Kakĺ doesn't pray and ask God to win games, but prays and thanks God for the talent and opportunities that He has given to him. Kakĺ knows that it still takes hard work on his part to accomplish things, but he truly uplifts the Lord's name whenever he gets the chance.

One highlight is that even though this soccer superstar was rich and famous, he kept his virginity until he married the love of his life. His wife also remained a virgin.

This is a good book for soccer fans. It gives tons of good soccer history info, and even has 'fun facts" at the end of each chapter. This is a good read for any young Christian who is into sports.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toward the Goal July 29, 2010
Format:Paperback
Kaka is a young Football (Soccer if you're from America) player from Brazil. He loves sports & he loves God. When he is seriously injured as a young teen, the doctors were surprised he wasn't paralysed, and were sure that he would never play sports again. But God is bigger than injuries, and Kaka went on to play football, in fact playing football very well!!

This book is written for preteens(9-12), with a great message of faith. It also talks about working hard for your goals. I like how the book is set up with story and background information. Without seeming like a 'school book' the author adds a few paragraphs at the end of each chapter about different topics (Brazil, history of soccer, world cup records ect), so you learn something new!! It was very fun. I also like how the author added the first round info for the 2010 World Cup, letting you know that Kaka's story isn't finished yet!! If you have a preteen that likes sports, check out this book!! (I actually checked into it because I have friends who have a preteen, and they are missionaries in Brazil!!, makes me feel a bit closer to them :) )

* NOTE - This book was provided to me by Zondervan free for review purposes. I was not asked to write a positive or negative review, all opinions are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Role Model July 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In a day when athletes make front page news for their criminal escapades it's great to read about someone that your kids can actually look up to. Kaka is a great read especially for kids that are really into soccer and if they want to have a good role model to emulate. I would recommend that any parent or coach purchase this book for their kids - especially - if they think they may have a future in soccer. it's a short and easy read and the writer mixes good soccer stories with insights into Brazilian culture, soccer culture, and the rise of Kaka. I was glad to just read a book about someone that you love to cheer for and see succeed because of their great work ethic, moral integrity, and Christ-like character. May Kaka's tribe increase mightily in a world that desperately needs hero's!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great player, zoo so writer
If you are a soccer fan, you know that writing a story about any Brazilian star should be easy. The book is uninspiring, fragmented and at times boring. A real disservice to Kaka.
