Product Description

Toward Manhood is about a man's psychospiritual journey toward full manhood. It is meant for any man who is questioning his work, his relationships, his parenting, the direction of his life. It is meant for any man looking for purpose in his life.

This book draws on sound and meaningful psychological and spiritual principles, written by an elder psychotherapist and pastoral counselor. It is based on the psychospiritual lessons learned from aboriginal male initiation rites lost to the modern world. It describes a healthy and meaningful inner journey that all men must take to find their true identity as a man. This inner journey brings a man to the wilderness within as surely as initiates were thrown into the wilderness of trackless desert or forest. The lessons of these rites are as relevant today as they have been for thousands of years.

Our ancestors knew much more of this journey than does our modern culture. One lesson is that a man's emotional and psychological journey of self awareness will move seamlessly into searching for spiritual answers. And these psychological and spiritual answers have to do with a man's calling, his work in his community and the world.

Toward Manhood explains why most men are burnt out today. They are burnt out from desperately trying to achieve inner manhood by the rules of a flawed modern masculine culture. So men find it almost impossible to find the inner peace and meaningful success that true manhood brings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most illuminating book I've read in the past 5 years, August 8, 2011

This book fills a huge gap in literature written for men. This is about men, for men. It's about the difficulty of achieving manhood in today's cultural environment. I'm nearly through it for the second time, and it reveals much that I missed the first time. I highly recommend this for all men who aren't sure what manhood means, and all those who are sure (you may not be correct!).

5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful book about the journey to manhood, September 30, 2011

This review is from: Toward Manhood: Into The Wilderness Of The Soul (Kindle Edition)
Toward Manhood: Into the wilderness of the soul is a God-send for men facing the challenge of becoming fully adult without much help. Most men today have little to go by when growing into manhood other than the images fed by media: either alpha cowboy bad boy seducer, or bumbling "yes dear" spouse who retreats to his man cave. I don't fall into either category, and neither do the great majority of men I know.

Men used to have intimate counsel from elders who taught them the ways of manhood. Boys becoming men were literally dragged into the wild and initiated, but those times have disappeared with the wilderness. Today we're left with pseudo-initiations of proving oneself in athletics and inviting danger, leaving a hole in life that's filled with depression, addiction, anger, and resentment in men who don't fit the popular mold. Just look at the men around you. Quiet desperation has been replaced by a crisis of desperation.

If you know what I mean, read Toward Manhood. You'll find insights and answers.

The language the author uses is straight-forward and easy to follow. The book is chocked with popular examples like the mythological roots of the Star Wars Saga and other references to popular culture. I've read it twice and applied what I learned. Mr. Pesavento taught me what it really means to be a man -- both strong and gentle, solid figurehead and tender caregiver -- and I'll never again accept the poor substitutes hawked by popular culture. Guys, read the first few paragraphs and tell me if it rings a bell. It did with me.
