Book Description

October 31, 2003
The honeybee is an amazing creature, and an invaluable member of our life-sustaining ecosystem. Yet it is currently in danger, and recent health problems such as mites and diseases have plagued the bee population. This book presents a fascinating overview of all aspects of beekeeping which relate to the health of the bee. The author covers topics such as materials for hives, the breeding of different types of bee, and the need for a holistic approach when treating diseases and parasites. The book is both a practical guide to beekeeping and a study of the honeybee as a powerful ecological barometer, from which we can learn a lot about our environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic! August 12, 2010
By Jill R
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fantastic introduction to bee "keeping" in a way that allows bees to do what bees do best -- be bees!

Let them build their comb as they prefer, let them keep their honey for winter instead of taking it away and then giving them sugar (you can still take surplus honey in the spring), let them keep their pollen, let them reproduce and improve their gene pool naturally, and don't whisk them across country at 65 miles an hour.

Think they might be healthier?

What's the catch? Our current demand for honey and pollination cannot be met if industrial beekeepers switch to these methods. A lot more people need to "keep" bees, in a lot more places, using methods that encourage them to do their thing.

Another activity that needs to go "local."

A beautiful book about beekeeping and the need for us all to change our attitudes about beekeeping to be more caring of the bees. The honeybee population is in decline, this book gives explanation why and how we can begin to address the real issues and causes in order to save our wonderful honeybees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book! (and start to make a change!) February 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Every beekeeper should read this book! It doesn't matter if you just started beekeeping or if you have been beekeeping for thirty years. I can higly recommend it. This book is not a book about beekeeping. It's a statement! It's a book about bees and how they should be treated in a natural and respectfull way. A book about bees losing their vitality and their health. And most of all: what WE can do to support the honeybee. There is mounting evidence that the honeybee is in great trouble. For me the book is a start in a new direction: Toward Saving the Honeybee! So if you are a beekeeper: please take your responsibility and make change! Mister Hauk,.. good work! Thank you! T. van der Meché, beekeeper, Holland

5.0 out of 5 stars Indeed... March 19, 2012
If you care about honeybees, read this book. If you care about bio-webs and the welfare of all living beings, read this book. Take it to heart. If you are not familiar with the concepts, read it twice. It's not just about bees, it's about an attitude. To quote the author: "Let us consider in our mind and heart, a renewed approach and care for all of our earth's creatures. Let us help the honeybee to regain her health and joy of living."
