Pleasant Reverie on a Towboat Journey and Industry Survey,

The author, the assistant editor of a West Virginia newspaper, got himself an invitation to join the eight-day journey on an Ohio River towboat for a first-hand observation of the lives and routines of towboat crewmen. In recounting his experiences at the elbow of the captain in the pilot house, Casto incorporates a good deal of fascinating Ohio River history, lore and the status of the industries served by towboats. This material could be pretty lackluster if laid out in purely factual form, but Casto blends the data smoothly into his journal of the trip from Huntington, West Virginia to Pittsburgh and back, giving a good feel for the typical work week of a river towboat and the dedication & professionalism of their crews during their 30-day tours of duty.
Highly recommended as a diesel-era update of Mark Twain's wonderful "Life on the Mississippi".
