Classic Style In A Very Modern Package
I admit it--when I first saw the idea of a modern-day hard-boiled first-person detective novel set in a big monster land yacht, I was amused and puzzled: How could these two things--old-style fiction and modern home-on-wheels luxury--fit together well? Happily, Chance has done it. This is first and foremost a clever, well-plotted mystery and a nail-biting action-suspense...

Sounds a lot like a Travis McGee rip off
Salvage consultant who lives in a motor home and has a financial expert as a sidekick? Hmm. Sounds a lot like salvage consultant Travis McGee who lives on a houseboat and has an economist as a sidekick. I'll try the book but any imitation of John D. MacDonald has a lot to live up to.

I admit it--when I first saw the idea of a modern-day hard-boiled first-person detective novel set in a big monster land yacht, I was amused and puzzled: How could these two things--old-style fiction and modern home-on-wheels luxury--fit together well? Happily, Chance has done it. This is first and foremost a clever, well-plotted mystery and a nail-biting action-suspense book with a good, tough goodguy in RV detective Ray Cid, a couple of really nasty and dangerous bad-guys, and not one but three beautiful and romantic women for our hero to encounter in various ways, not to mention the off-beat sidekick, "Oscar," who seasons the mix with wit and a cockney rhyming-slang spice.It also told me a whole lot about a world my only prior interest in was as these huge RV's zip by me on the highway. Turns out there's a lot of intrigue, skullduggery, and inside stuff about this industry and lifestyle that author Chance clearly knows well, so I'll bet those, like me, who were "RV virgins" will find it as fascinating as I did but also the experienced road campers will just love the fact that their universe has finally gotten fictional attention that's first-class indeed.Fun, exciting, romantic, and the good guy wins in the end? Just the kind of reading enjoyment I'm looking for, and I'll bet you'll have fun, too. Get "Towed In A Hole" and read to the end and you'll be as hungry as I am for the promised sequel "Slide Out" that the book says is "coming soon!" Good! We need heroes like Ray Cid and authors like Lawrence Chance who know how to tell a tale. I gave "Towed In A Hole" five glowing stars, and all mystery OR RV lovers will do so, too.
