This review is from: Tower of Babel Pop-Up and Read (Pop-Up & Read) (Hardcover)
Not only is the book visually interesting, it's Biblically accurate. This is a great supplement for homeschooling families, and even if you don't homeschool, it's a great buy for your family. My kids love this book and it started some very good discussion for us. Amazon's price is very reasonable and combined with other purchases for free shipping makes it a great deal!

Great Teaching Tool,

You may have noticed that this book has a large pop-up feature. Well, I can tell you that that was a huge hit with my boys. The colors and illustrations throughout the book were equally as impressive. In fact, my 7 year old is begging to take it to school because he says that everyone should know about the Tower of Babel. I'm thinking he actually just wants to show everyone the pop-up part, but I could be wrong. In any case, the book was informative and I know we'll be reading it again and again (that's kind of a given with a 4 year old who is obsessed with books). And honestly, when it's educational and more importantly, Biblical, I don't mind reading a book over and over.

A Great Introduction to The Tower of Babel,
By Cynthia E. Downes "Cindy Downes" (Broken Arrow, OK, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Tower of Babel Pop-Up and Read (Pop-Up & Read) (Hardcover)
The Tower of Babel by Jon Taylor is a beautiful hardback book containing 22 pages of vivid color illustrations and large print text. Although marketed as a pop-up book, there is actually only one pop-up -- a large two-page-wide model of the Tower of Babel that pops up on the first page and remains up throughout the book.
The book is based on Genesis 11:1-9 in the Bible. It introduces the reader to the Tower of Babel and provides a brief explanation as to how we got our various people groups. Although it is advertised for ages 4-8, I recommend reading it as part of a family Bible study before reading the actual account in the Bible. The vocabulary and subject matter is too difficult for most four to eight year olds to grasp on their own. On the other hand, your older children will probably want more explanation than is given in this book. As an introduction to this passage of scripture, The Tower of Babel does a great job. The beautiful color illustrations and fun pop-up Tower of Babel will keep your children's interest as you read and discuss the text together. For a more detailed Biblical explanation of the Tower of Babel and our various people groups, I recommend the Answers In Genesis Web site. www.answersingenesis.org.

I bought this book because some of the other Tower of Babel books got controversial remarks from their reviewers. If I had to do it over, though, I probably would have gotten the Gloria Clanin or other basic book instead. This one is nice, but actually the best part is the text, not the pop up. The text gets into the mindset and worldview very well, which can be hard for kids just relying on Genesis 11 alone.
But the pop up is just one huge thing that stays up as you read through the pages of text. It is a cool idea but disappoints a little in reality. The other thing is the size of the book... it is a huge so you have to lay it horizontally on the shelf. Its size and the pop up make you think it is for younger ages, but actually the text is geared more towards 2nd or 3rd grade. I wouldn't let kindergartners use it without supervision (or let any boy hang out with it too long!). Nice item, but luxury rather than a staple. |
