This book is not for deep thinking. It is a good action adventure story. Cormac mac Art is the Irish warrior exiled from his homeland (see "Mists of Doom"). In this book, he teams with Wulfhere as pirates along the coast of Europe. They are betrayed and flee south to Spain where they help defend King Veremund against blood-sucking kelp and Ran's daughters aboard a barge of human bones.
