4.0 out of 5 stars A perfectly relaxing average anime, with a sequel!, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Tower of Druaga: Part Two - The Sword of Uruk (DVD)

The Tower of Druaga is a series created by one of my favorite anime studios Gonzo.

The thing with Druaga is this:

1. It's a parody of video games and RPGs, and fantasy in general.
2. The first series' actual story is hindered by it's fun-humor, that it keeps the audience from taking it serious.
3. The ending will make you want to see more!

So we have the sequel. Some time passes, and Jil, the hero from before, has been betrayed by some of his closest friends leaving him saddened and un-motivated.
Sure they manage to defeat Druaga, but the aftermath is definately not what Jil had anticipated...

His former comrades are either dead or missing, and all he left with are bitter memories, and remnants of his brother's former party...

The next chapter, Sword of Uruk, focuses more on the world that they are in, the reasons behind the sudden betrayal, and the integrity of Jil and his obsessive drive to be a "hero", even if being a hero is not what is necessary...

Funimation, again, dubbed and licensed this fun gem, and used the same VA's as before. Todd is a wonderful pick for Jil, Chuck and Monica create a lively and strangely unique party of Melt and Coopa, and Travis as Neeba plays a self-assured, yet properly motivated person, whose intents are bigger than anyone in this series' universe!
Funimation has also added a 5.1 surround to it for better depth.

It's funny, it's action-packed, it's clever, and it's FINAL! The sequel will finish off what has been left behind, and it will leave you smiling throughout it's harmless, easy adventure!

This is a great series if you enjoy storytelling! Don't judge it by the first pilot episode, I almost thought it was just a spoof! You have great character development and acting! I reccomend this and Berserk!

4.0 out of 5 stars massive improvement., January 5, 2011
This review is from: Tower of Druaga: Part Two - The Sword of Uruk (DVD)
"Sword" is the follow up 12 part series to the "Aegis" series in the Tower of Druaga storyline. Aegis, while not un-enjoyable, suffered from a lack of cohesion as it mocked and then became an overwrought fantasy saga. the beginning and end were both fun in there way, but didn't fit together. Sword does a much better job. Carrying on the more dramatic tone of the final episodes of Aegis, Sword picks up with the fallout of victory and betrayal that marked the closing of the first series. Here, Jil and his friends pursue Neeba and Kaaya into the Tower of Fantasy in an attempt to understand what their world is really about and how to right it.

There are certainly better fantasy series out there - Tears to Tiara and Utawarerumono come to mind - but this one is quite enjoyable. A good amount of drama, a satisfying degree of resolution, and enough character development that you want to hang around to see how everyone ends up. I was iffy on Aegis, but if you have already watched it, definitely follow it up with Sword. And if you are generally a fantasy anime fan, this won't be a waste of time.
