This review is from: The Room in the Tower and Other Stories (Paperback)
E. F. ( fred to his friends) Benson was a prolific, essayist , story writer, champion skater and to top it off the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Known for his series of Mapp and Lucia books, he was an extremely prolific writer turning out novels ,short stories ,fiction and non fiction and essays, his ghost/supernatural stories are considered among some of the best ever written. Some of these stories can be found in anthologies and collections this selection, is a reprint of his' Room in the tower and other stories' from 1912. Here are contained, excellent examples of the art of the short story and the ghost story in particular among them is, " The man who went too far" which deals with seeing a side of nature often felt but luckily not encountered, somewhat like that experienced in another great of short fiction, " The Great God Pan" by Arthur Machen, which is also well worth reading. Bensons stories, were considered among the greatest of the genre by no less than H.P. Lovecraft !stories included such as the 'Bus Conductor', and 'Caterpillars' , are almost like advanced psychology in their cases of precognition. 17 excellent tales perfect for winter nights or any night, but leave the lights on!
