Product Description

The TowerRAID TR4UT-B is a 4-bay RAID enclosure that utilizes the widely available USB 3.0 and performance orientated eSATA to provide over 200MB/s in performance. With built-in support for RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare support and JBOD, the TR4UT-B provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. A brand new RAID mode, CLONE or N-Way Mirror, is introduced to replicate the saved data throughout each installed hard drive. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure, where all RAID parity calculation will be offload to the unit, instead of the controller card or computer, to achieve high performance. The unit's hardware RAID capability also helps to eliminate OS compatibility issues where installation software is unnecessary. To satisfy the need for performance hungry applications, each unit is bundled with a 2-port PCIe 2.0 x1 eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0 Gbps (6G) support (Highpoint Tech R622 Controller card). PCIe 2.0 provides twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0 unit, allowing over 200MB/s in performance. The unit is backward compatibility with PCIe 1.0 slots, to provide eSATA connectivity without eSATA built-in. Designed with easy installation in mind, the trayless TR4UT-B allows effortless installation by simply inserting the hard drive after opening the protective ventilating cover.

My original review is below...since then this and other Sans Digital products have cost me lots of aggravation.

This particular unit died after about two years. It did work fine until then, but then went completely dead. I contacted Sans Digital, no warranty repair, they suggested ordering a new power supply. I tore the thing apart, put in the new power supply...and it was still dead. Thus the problem must have been with the motherboard. The power supply cost me $100, waste of money.

I ordered one of Sans Digital's newer five bay units. I was suffering from lots of strange crashes on my computer---it turns out this was due to the RocketRaid card shipped with the product, though it was hard to diagnose. Then under 11 months after ordering, this unit started only recognizing the drives intermittently and now barely works (again it wasn't clear initially that the drive was at fault, I thought it might be the computer or the card).

Anyway, my conclusion is that this company sells cheap products that ultimately are not very reliable. Fortunately I was running everything in JBOD mode so it was easy to migrate data. I certainly wouldn't take the risk of RAID with these.

Side note: it seems surprisingly hard to find a reliable, well reviewed JBOD enclosure. Seems like a real gap in the market.

I am very impressed with this unit. I was worried from some of the other reviews about fan noise, and while it's not silent, it is a quiet, high quality fan. Paired with my Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green drives, it makes for a compact, quiet unit that doesn't generate too much heat.

Putting the drives themselves into this unit is a simple matter and doesn't require a screwdriver or mounting brackets.

I have been using this product for a couple months now without any major issues. I loaded it up with three 2TB drives in RAID 5 mode to store all my videos and backups. Installation was straight forward and I got it up and working on USB without a hitch. I have not been able to get the eSATA to work but I do not think it is the unit, rather it is something wrong with my server I need to fix. I definately recommend the hardware RAID version like this one so you do not have to mess with loading software. You just plug it in and it works.
