About the Author

English novelist, clergyman and professor. Kingsley's most popular work is the children's classic, The Water Babies (1863). He was one of the founders of the Christian Socialist Movement, and firmly believed in social welfare and democracy. His writings and teachings led to social development in Britain. Kingsley's Alton Locke (1850) and Yeast (1850) are reflective of his sympathy for the poor and down- trodden. However, he is chiefly famous for his historical romantic novels. These include Hypatia (1853), Two Years Ago (1857), and Hereward the Wake (1866). He became chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1859. He was one of the first clergymen to accept and promote Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
