Not what I expected,

This review is from: A Town Like Alice - A Look at the Real Town from the Highly Acclaimed Movie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I thought that this video would contain information about the actual town, the people who live there, the interests they have, the isolation they muct experience, what the town looked like. Instead it's focus was primarily on the Aboriginal people and the drought. While this was all important and basic to Alice Springs, I don't think that it should have encompased the entire video--there was nothing about the normal, average people living there, nothing about the town--no tourist stuff in other words. While not, perhaps, meant to be a tourist video, I do think that showing some highlights (surely there must be some) of this unique city might have been shown. I did not need to learn about the aboriginal drinking problems or quite so much about the one major station owner.

A Town Like Alice is a film I first viewed on the BBC while living in the UK many years ago. It deeply touched me then; it deeply touches me today! Compassion, generosity, honesty - all terms that apply to the characters and the plot - a horrendously difficult situation for British women and children forced to march throughout Malaysia by their Japanese captors. Displaced persons, yet nowhere to go; prisoners, yet no one to make a decision about their fate. Ill, weary, separated from their husbands, parents, loved ones! The twists and turns of fate will both surprise you and, at times, break your heart! A true reality check!

This is a brilliant movie that deserves to be captured on DVD, but isn't (sigh). My VHS copy is nearly worn out...

Having read the book and seen the film this video was very meaningful. It gave me a good understanding of the difficulties that the settlers faced.
