Editorial Reviews

Allen Richards, B-Independent.com
The micro-budget version of Tod Browning's FREAKS. It's gritty, bleak, and funny as hell.

Product Description
Welcome to Schlarb, Ohio…a small town overrun by misfits, freaks and weirdos! Dickie (Toby Radloff, KILLER NERD) is a lonely dumpster-diver who finds companionship in his latest discovery…a young woman's corpse! Pricey (Lori Scarlett, OZONE) is a mute girl with a lookalike baby-doll. When she loses her doll after an unsavory encounter, she replaces it with the next best thing — her neighbor's young son! Meanwhile, the enigmatic Caduceus sets out to cleanse a nasty high school girl of her wicked ways. Scenes to follow include necrophilia, marijuana-smoking lesbians, the sexual assault of a mentally-challenged girl and a dinner plate of skinned and cooked squirrels — not for the weak! A "Magnum Opus of CineTrash" from cult filmmaker Wayne Alan Harold (KILLER NERD, GIRLFRIENDS)!

5.0 out of 5 stars A shining specimen of great low-budget filmic art ... , January 17, 2005
By White Zombie "artcre8or" (Coatesville, IN 46121 United States) - See all my reviews
The blurb on the back claims this film is about "Schlarb, OH, a town overrun with misfits, freaks and weirdos." It may be because I am a misfit, a freak, and a weirdo that leads me to the conclusion that the "Townies" in this film are a better representation of the human race than the so-called "normal" characters. Caduceus, one of the many Townies, is by far the coolest character in the film as he becomes fed up with being treated as an inferior and sets out to teach the "normal" people a lesson they won't soon forget.
I gave this film two good viewings. The first time I watched this movie I liked it all right; but I was severely disappointed at the seeming lack of an ending. I found the film very entertaining on the whole. For a "Micro-budget" production it was very well done. The script was good, the acting was surprisingly good considering the parts were played mainly by friends of the filmmaker, and the direction and editing were spot on. After my first viewing, I decided this was definitely a film I would like to see again. After the second viewing I came to the realization that this movie is truly a great work of filmic art. Several lines from this movie were immediately added to my mental arsenal of movie quotes I keep on the ready, and I think they will stay there for quite some time. Also after the second viewing, the seeming lack of an ending didn't bother me so much. In fact, I realized that the ending is pretty freakin' climactic, and probably disturbing to normal folk. This movie is an instant classic, and has landed itself a spot on my list of greatest films ever produced. Just what spot I'm not yet sure . . . that just might require a third viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Dat Squirrel!!, July 16, 2002
In my mind, the dream sequence in Townies, the one with the happy-go-lucky, domesticated squirrel, is one of the greatest moments in cinema. But don't take my word for it, I'm not normal. I don't fit in. Then again, maybe that's why I love this movie so much. It's a celluloid love letter to freaks, misfits, goofballs, psychos, shut-ins, geeks and weirdoes everywhere. Thank you Wayne Alan Harold! Those of us with hands salute you.

2.0 out of 5 stars A blind man would love to see this movie, April 29, 2004
By A Customer
The description on the box is misleading. The story line is choppy, and the continuity sucks. Multiple plot lines don't climax or end and it's dry. The movies concept was good, but not properly executed. It looks like a home movie gone bad.
