Book Description

April 1992 0748601511 978-0748601516
This book gives a portrait of life in a medieval Scottish burgh. It focuses on the social history of the town, arguing that the Scottish burgh was a full and active member of the community of the realm, not an anomaly in a medieval kingdom. Using the latest material from recent archaeological discoveries as well as new research from documentary sources, the book aims to give a complete picture of 14th-century urban life. It looks in particular at the conditions of life, government, property-holding, trade and industry, the sense of community and the place of the burgh within the wider realm of Scotland. It emphasizes the close relationship between burgh and countryside and the active participation of the burgesses in the society.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful treasure trove for historians and writers, October 9, 2002
This review is from: Townlife in Fourteenth-Century Scotland (Paperback)
Ewan concentrates in rich detail on the burghs of Scotland in the 14th Century. For writers looking for a more detailed account of the everyday workings of a big town in Scotland during this period that saw the rise of the Bruce to power, you cannot beat this. She covers the everyday life in the Burgh; how it is governed and maintained; how trade of all Scotland flowed through these towns and into Europe; she covers possession of properties and how the burgh functioned within the whole of Scotland.
She has an easy writing style that makes the facts take on a interesting life and it is well worth the price.
