5.0 out of 5 stars Reasuring Research that your mattress can kill you.
Walter's book was a Godsend. It was available at my local library. He has done all the research about the unregulated toxins that we bring into our homes, our bedrooms, and then breathe in all night. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great!
I to purchased this book and it is very helpful, however there was a little to much pushing towards what to purchase or "buy me" ads is what my husband commonly refer to them as. I would have appreciated a little more scientific facts, (not that I didn't believe what was said there just wasn't enough information for me). There is so much that could have been written and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Reasuring Research that your mattress can kill you., March 27, 2010
This review is from: Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night's Sleep (Paperback)
Walter's book was a Godsend. It was available at my local library. He has done all the research about the unregulated toxins that we bring into our homes, our bedrooms, and then breathe in all night. My wife thought I was nuts until I brought the book home and was able to show her all the toxins our new mattress was off-gassing. Every wonder what the smell is? This book will detail what they are, what the chemicals are, and what their effects are. The book also provides places to go for further research, and also instructions on how to buy toxin free furniture and other products for you home.

I bought a Tempur-pedic mattress. From the very first night I felt like I was being drugged, the sleep was not restful and I awoke more tired than when I went to bed. I began to have flu-like symptoms which got worse. Within two weeks I was so ill I almost couldn't go to work. I sneezed at work and got a nose bleed. Hadn't had one in years.

My symptoms were nausea, headache, mental confusion, lack of energy. I googled on toxic fumes and Tempur-pedic and a number of websites popped up with similar stories. Engineers in the field call it the "Chemical Flu." It is known, but the public doesn't know about it.

Some people, such as myself, react strongly to the VOC's emitted by these mattresses. I feel lucky that I reacted so quickly and returned it. With the mattress out of the house, I am getting better every day. However, I wonder about people who don't react so quickly. They may not be able to make the connection that the new mattress they bought is what is making them ill. Six months later, are they diagnosed with Fibromyalsia or Chronic Fatigue syndrome?

I am only posting this for one reason. Please be aware that that this type of mattress does emit toxic fumes. BE AWARE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Your Bedroom a Sanctuary, August 27, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night's Sleep (Paperback)
As I suffer from various allergies, for years I have desired and as finances allowed endevoured to make my home the most toxic free place possible. I have read that even if you can't affored to redo your whole home using healthy materials, the place to concentrate on in your endevour to have a healthy living envirorment is the bedroom. You spend one third of you day sleeping and because of the restorative power of a good night's sleep, your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Wlater Bader gives you guidelines on exactly how to accomplish this goal.

Bader tells about the harmful naterials that go into a conventional polyurethene foam matress, a memory foam mattess and the flame retardents used on your mattresses. Wool is a natural flame retardent. Bader also shares the down side to conventially grown cotton. Twenty five percent of the world's pesticides and a good portion of the other toxic chemicals are used to grow convential cotton. For this reason the author recommends organic cotton. I do not want to be harming myself with the outgasing of these poisonous pesticides and other checicals, nor do I ewant to be harming the envirorment. As the sheep are free range animals and not dipped in toxic chemicals, the author also recommends pure grow will be used in bedding products. He also highly recommends natural latex, which is from the rubber tree plant. As well as discussing the various types of bed construction materials and bedding choices, Bader also discusses the part that electromagnetic fields play in having a healthy bedroom. He also has an informative chapter on dust mites and how to keep them out of your bedroom. Bader's book is a well written, informative read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting a Good Night's Sleep..., May 16, 2007
This review is from: Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night's Sleep (Paperback)
This is a great book for transitioning to a healthy living environment beyond simply eating organic. While pragmatic in approach, this book is by no means dry or overly scholarly. In lieu of an alarming scenario without suggestion, a simple approach is offered to create a healthy environment. As an organic consumer, I was shocked to find that I was oblivious to the consequences of my bedroom environment. A comprehensive list of chemicals commonly found in mattresses, along with their characteristics provides a compelling argument against conventional mattresses. Removing toxins and carcinogens from my bed had not occurred to me as a necessary consideration. With the simple avoidance and replacement approach, organic sleeping has never seemed so necessary or approachable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful info, May 6, 2011

This review is from: Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night's Sleep (Paperback)
Good book, well-researched. I thought it would seem like a sales ploy because the author runs a natural bedding company but it really doesn't. It's a useful book written from a guy with multiple chemical sensitivities. He mentions his company just a handful of times and more towards the end, and not in a pushy way. I didn't feel pressured to buy from him in the slightest and the info is useful even if you have no interest in his company.

Covers information I haven't been able to find anywhere else, even with extensive internet research, mainly because he goes into more depth than websites and other books (no really good competitor book on this topic that I know of). Covers sources of bedroom toxins comprehensively and, importantly, how to address them. Furniture, bedding, flooring, chemicals from the bathroom air, sheets, dry cleaning, etc. Lists the specific chemicals he's found emit from memory foam and innerspring mattresses, as well as from his company's latex and innerspring mattresses. I was glad for the specifics.

I'm glad I read it.

I to purchased this book and it is very helpful, however there was a little to much pushing towards what to purchase or "buy me" ads is what my husband commonly refer to them as. I would have appreciated a little more scientific facts, (not that I didn't believe what was said there just wasn't enough information for me). There is so much that could have been written and said about the subject and the book is so super thin for the price that it was kinda a let down. In short it's a nice hardy pamphlet to have but I would either share it with a friend to justify the cost or desperately try and find it used.
