Book Description

July 1995
"Heather Millar was 30 years old when she felt that first tightness in her chest. A registered nurse with nine years in pediatric care, she was working on a short-term contract in San Antonio, Tex. when waves of exhaustion washed over her . . ." (Nicole Parton, The Vancouver Sun, November 28, 1994.)

The Toxic Labyrinth is the chilling account of Heather's struggle with symptoms which mimic asthma, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and many other illnesses. All testing proves negative, and her condition is diagnosed as stress and anxiety.

When she becomes allergic to everything, Heather and her family are forced into a desperate race against time to save her life. As they probe for answers and challenge the findings of conventional medicine, the cause of the mysterious illness gradually become clear: Heather is being poisoned. The culprit-common chemicals which are so much a part of our twentieth century environment. However, with determination and her family's support, Heather wins the battle.

This book is not just for those who suffer from the effects of our toxic environment, but for all who wonder if they could be next.

Editorial Reviews

Review

For as Heather and I and thousands of others who have conquered E.I. know, it is primarily through a tremendous amount of knowledge, lovingly imparted, that others may also heal the impossible. We are the first generation of this man-made disease, with bizarre symptoms that totally stump medicine. Understandably, we have all felt the need to share so that we can lessen the burden of others. Thank you Heather and Myrna for a great job. -- Sherry Rogers, MD, Author of Tired or Toxic?

Forget the television program ER. This book is more exciting than an ambulance ride! If you ever get ill, you must read this to find out what you're in for. If you plan to get well, you should read this book to find out how. I recommend it to everyone who is really concerned about their health. -- Eric Gardiner, Author of How I Conquered Cancer

I have just finished devouring The Toxic Labyrinth. It is a source of information and inspiration and most of all empowerment, not only to those persons for whom environmentally and/or chemically induced illness or injury has wrecked havoc, but to anyone who remains willing and able to continue exploring the vast areas of human ill health that baffle conventional medical wisdom. . . . I truly believe that it should be compulsory reading for every med and nursing student -- Hilary Balmer, RN, Executive Research Director, Research, Advocacy and Information Network on Environmental Toxins

The Toxic Labyrinth is a must read for anyone who is sick all over and thinks there is no way out of the nightmare. Especially recommended for people who are bothered by fabric odors, perfume, smoke, or other environmental pollutants. Beautifully written and authoritative. -- William G. Crook, MD, Author of The Yeast Connection and the Woman

From the Author

When we looked for a cause and effect relationship to explain Heather's illness, the evidence pointing to environmental toxins became overwhelming. Further research and discussions with individuals who also exhibited similar symptoms from exposure to environmental toxins, revealed the magnitude of threat this issue poses for health of the general population, especially children.

These factors convinced us that telling Heather's story would provide a warning of the imminent and subtle danger of chemical toxins and a voice for those who suffer from a condition rarely recognized by health care professionals.
