This Book Is an Excellent Read!,

This review is from: Toxic People: 10 Ways Of Dealing With People Who Make Your Life Miserable (Paperback)
Lillian Glass writes a highly intelligent book on how to deal with the negative people in this world who live to create tensions for others - and let's face it, they're everywhere! I originally bought the book because I worked for a very difficult woman(she was what the author referred to as "The Competitor"). I needed some advice desperately, and this book came to my rescue all the way. It offers ways in which to recognize toxic people, and many strategies on coping with their behavior. It helped me learn how to deal with negative behavior tactfully and maturely. There aren't many books on the market today that offer that. I followed the tips and suggestions, and my interpersonal skills have improved dramatically. I am in total agreement with the author about how the cause of most toxic behavior is rooted in jealousy. As for some of the negative reviews on this book----quite frankly, I'm baffled. I felt the author was extremely astute. I myself, found the book to be very helpful and insightful.

I found this book helpful. I never realized how many different kinds of toxic people there are and how even I can be toxic in several categories. This book has helped me learn how to confront difficult people in my life, and when the situation calls for it, unplug completely as no one is worth losing my self image over.Dr. Glass uses real life stories from patients to encourage readers that there is hope to recover from the effects toxic people have on us. It's easy to read and see people you know in each of her descriptions of the toxic individuals. Now I am seeing how I too can be toxic and am working towards eliminating patterns that keep me around negative people.

I bought this book sometime ago, I've read it several times, and boy does Lillian Glass provide the reader with a ton of useful information on how to deal with all the difficult monsters who try to transform you life into a nightmare. Lillian Glass plots each toxic type of personality in chronological order, and then goes on to explain how to deal with these people in an effective way that leaves you with your sanity. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to improve their relationships, both personal and professional. Remeber, the people round you do affect the quality of your life and this book is an effective tool to help you rid yourself of all the monsters who want to turn it into a nightmare!

I originally borrowed the book from the local library. I was so impressed by it that I bought a copy of my own through Amazon. This book gives clear descriptions of the different types of toxic people, and specific ways of dealing with them. This is one of those books that you will want to read with your highlighter handy and keep around for future reference. Like death and taxes, toxic people are inevitable. It also gives advice on how to cut off toxic relationships when thing trying to mend them doesn't work. She also asks that you do a self check to see how toxic you are. I can not give enough praise for this book. It has been a major eye opener for me. It has helped me deal effectively with the toxic people in my life and made me realize that I behave in a toxic manner to some people as well. I highly recommend it. psychology, boundries, self-help

If you find that people constantly disappoint or amaze you with their actions and words, this book can be used as a great reference. It is highly enlightening and a good tool on how to deal with other, situations and yourself. Only intelligent readers can use this book discriminately and see the humor in all types of people. It changed my life in such a positive manner-i'd recommended it to the young and old in any profession.

Far too simplistic,

I liked some things in the book. She is very clear that one can never resort to violence in dealing with a toxic person. Her earnestness around creating a more peaceful world is admirable. Even though I'd have liked a bit more depth of analysis, I agree with her argument that people who behave in a toxic manner are generally insecure. I liked how she took the ten techniques and showed the best people to use them with, depending on either the type of person they are, or their role in the reader's life. I particularly liked her work on dealing with the anger and hurt of a toxic relationship and the chapter or revitalizing a toxic relationship. The parts of the book I did like, however, suffered from the same simplicity as the rest of the book. That said, overall I thought the book was a waste of my money. I could easily have taken it out of the library, read it in a day and returned it. Nothing in the book really stuck with me. The techniques she suggested have been described in better detail by other authors. I will concede that some of these strategies do work. I thought she advocated just cutting people out of one's life far too easily and frequently. Alot of the book seemed very judgemental, and Glass came across as condescending in parts. The is full of broad generalizations. Her descriptions of the 30 different types are far too short. As a result, I could make anyone fit into the category of a toxic person based on the way she's described them. The fact that a person is annoying doesn't make them toxic. In general, there are other books on the market that are far better at helping readers cope with difficult people. I wouldn't put this one first on my list.

I bought this book because I work with an "angry pugilist" (as denoted by Dr. Glass). I found this book a very easy read, it was very amusing, so it kept my interest, unlike some of the other really dry ones. She identifies a bunch of different types of "toxic" people like "bitchy bossy bullies", "wishy washy wimp" "the mental case", and so many more. She gives explicit detailed desciptives of these people, then she gives examples of their behavior, and then she goes into techniques to deal with them. Although some of the come backs she uses are definitely brash, and I probably wouldn't say half of them, they are still REALLY funny, and as I read out loud at work, some of us were in tears laughing so hard. There are a few things I did learn from the book about myself actually, and if I can rethink the way I am, I may have better success dealing with miserable people.

The greatest book I have ever read!,

This review is from: Toxic People (Hardcover)
Toxic People opened a door to a world I thought only existed for myself. I have a toxic parent and I spent almost 23 years full of anger, anxiety and depression. I saw Dr. Glass on television and immediately went out and bought the book. It has been my daily bible ever since!

Lillian Glass has written an interesting book that certainly is worth reading if only to give you another way of dealing with the 'unsociable' people in your life. Certainly, there were several excellant terms of phrases that Lillian recommends you use when replying to obnoxious behaviour by others.Apart from that, I felt that this author's analysis of the type of people who make decent peoples's live miserable to be rather shallow. Although she is a communications expert and no doubt that requires a fair degree of psychology, she is not a psychologist and it shows particularly when comparing the writings of say Dr Paul Hauck for example. Lillian appears to have used too many labels, 30, in categorising toxic people. In truth, there might well be many more types of behaviour, but surely there are considerably less 'types of personalities', but most have learnt many other behaviours to varying degrees during there lives. No, this book is a good start in beginning to handle toxic people, but should not be considered the definitive article. A better method is Paul Hauck's book on 'how to cope with people who dive you crazy'. It says much more, in far fewer words. |
