From the Back Cover

It's finally summer in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, which means afternoons at the pool, high school graduation—and the end of the scandal that has rocked the town for years. Or so everyone thinks. It's been weeks since police caught the notorious stalker and murderer known as A. But Hanna, Aria, Emily, and Spencer know that the real A is still out there. And as long as A is on the loose, nothing can ever go back to normal . . . if there is such a thing as normal in Rosewood.

Hanna is offered the role of a lifetime—in a movie about her life. Aria's paintings go viral, until her fine art escalates to the art of war. Spencer starts an antibullying blog but finds that her homepage is as dangerous as her home life. And Emily goes behind bars to reconnect with the only girl who ever stole her heart.

But these little liars need to watch their backs. They should know by now that A never forgives and never forgets. And this time, A is determined to bring them down—once and for all.

More About the Author

Hello! I'm from outside Philadelphia, lived in New York for a long time, Arizona for less time, and now I'm in Pittsburgh, PA, which is way nicer than it sounds.

I've always been a writer. I made up stories about my sister's blanket, BeeBee, when I was four. From there I wrote about squareheaded creatures, an environmental saga about little yellow men who live in vegetable gardens, teenage dramas well before I was a teenager, a book series about a Japanese girl who finds out her ancestors are samaurai (and she must be one, too), a bunch of arty short stories, and some books that maybe you've heard of. The PRETTY LITTLE LIARS series is based on my experiences there...kind of. Sort of a hyperbolic version of them. Plus some random stuff thrown in.

I've also written THE LYING GAME, which is about a dead twin and an alive twin, THE HEIRESSES, which is about a rich family's curse, and THE PERFECTIONISTS, which is about five somewhat strangers who get everything they wanted...but that comes at a price. I wrote THE VISIBLES, which is about jackalopes and mental illness, and EVERYTHING WE EVER WANTED, which features a guy who discovers his ex lives on a commune.

I started reading the series 2 years ago, and I love the books so much that I preorder/buy them the day they come out. In my review of Deadly (#14), I wrote that the series was getting stretched thin but that the books were still entertaining. This book challenges that. As the penultimate in the series, I was looking forward to Toxic, especially since I was making a cross country journey last week when it came out. Sorely disappointed. It seemed shorter than the others, and, as others have said, it's pretty much pure filler. I'd also swear it was ghostwritten. I can't put my finger on why, but that's the vibe I get from it. Also, only one significant thing happens. I bet you could skip straight to 16 without missing anything.

It's not just me judging from other below reviews- this book just felt as if she was just rushing it; and tying up loose ends (although I'm not sure if any loose ends were resolved!)

It's like others below said; there was no sustance to the plot and all the storylines were quite farfetched.

I will read to the end, but this is the first PLL book where I haven't been excited and there were NO plot twists! Quite disappointing.

I really loved this series. I've read all of the books despite how unrealistic they've become. I was really disappointed in this one. There was no serious plot and I felt like nothing happened. The same storyline is told over and over again. I really hope the last book is better.

"Toxic" by Sara Shepard is a "Toxic" book. This book was sometimes good and sometimes terrible. Sara Shepard's writing style is like a marathon runner; she starts out strong and in first place and ends the marathon in last place. "Toxic" had good details in the beginning but just ended up disappointing. (Caution: Spoilers) "Toxic" is so predicting. Ali killing people after using them for her devious deeds, the girls finding a lead which turns out to be a trick, etc. Haven't we seen this already? I mean come on; I'm desperate for something new! As a big fan and reader for over a year, I think Sara Shepard is pushing her luck. I hope "Vicious" is the book with a home run.

I am a huge fan of the books as well as the show. Toxic was a decent book, but it was very slow until the middle to end. This would be my least favorite of the trilogy. The author focused too much on characters and what they were doing with their lives, and not enough on their real problem of A/Ali and tracking her down. Very predictible

"Toxic" was an unusual entry in the series. On one hand, it's interesting to read a PLL book where you already know who A is without cryptic silly texts -- and it certainly feels like things are wrapping up, FINALLY, since book 16 was announced as being the last one. So there's a sense of completion, of resolution.

But even with that, there were issues, or should I say, just... elements that felt odd and contrived at this late hour (as in, so far into the series). Shepard isn't doing enough in a penultimate book because she knows there's one more to go. This was more of a stepping stone to it. Shepard has had endless practice pushing this series far too long, so maybe I'm just tired. These girls don't learn from their mistakes, and the trend just keeps on and on and on....

"The Ali Cats" angle seemed odd and all too convenient, especially considering how long Ali's been "out there". The whole Ali/Courtney thing came to light after book 8, and only now do these loyal followers pop up? It's simple plot convenience and I'm not all for it. Secondly, Fuji's behaviour has always struck me as odd, and uncharacteristically so. We're here hoping these girls make it and that Ali gets her comeuppance (and, let's face it, that's likely how it'll go down) but there's this FBI agent who was formerly an ally but has really changed her tune. It all seems silly, especially because I think that ending will be erased a chapter or two into "Vicious". It reminds me of those Goosebumps books I cherished as a kid -- where something spooky happens at the end of one chapter, but it turns out to be absolutely nothing to start the next. That's the case here, but dragged out. The big bold ending here will be reneged early into the final chapter.

I liked the book, but it was not nearly as good or action packed as the others have been. It was more predictable as well. Not my favorite of the series.

This book was literally a waste of time. It was a disconcerting thought knowing that there is only one more book left and this book was purely contractual. There was absolutely no point to the book, it didn't even really have a presence of A. Hana's story in this book had no purpose at all and was really not interesting. I am ready for this series to END! I have been reading this series for a long time and have had to put up with all the times Sara Shepard has said "this is my last book". The books of become ridiculous because Shepard has been trying to stretch a story that no longer has anywhere to go. Shepard keeps claiming that one of the reasons she continues to write the books is because the fans demand more but if she were to truly read the comments about her latest books she would see so many people just want closure.
I continue to read this series because I have already invested so much time into reading them I need to know what happens. If more books come out after #16 I don't think I can continue reading, it's just too much.
