From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Using the scientific method, youngsters are encouraged to experiment with toys like Slinkies, Silly Putty, Frisbees, and blocks to learn about flight, gravity, matter, pressure and waves, and objects in motion. Each chapter lists toys that could be used to examine the properties introduced, briefly defines the "Big Idea," and gives examples of hypothetical experiments. Children's natural questioning about why these toys do what they do should lead to "what if" types of questions, which should lead to testing of their theories. Cartoon-style illustrations are mostly to add interest; only those on the "Big Idea" pages add information to the text. Toy Lab should pique youngsters' interest, even those who are not usually drawn to scientific experiments, and will give students some ideas for science fair projects as well.
