Arnold Toynbee Appreciation,
By meow tomcat (British Columbia, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toynbee: Reappraisals (Hardcover)
The famous British historian Arnold Toynbee (1889- 1975) saw history as world history while his critics saw history as national history. Toynbee saw pattern and meaning to history while his critics saw a story, but no pattern and no meaning. While Toynbee conceded that his magnum opus A Study of History was meta history, he never recanted his theology that there is more than one religion leading to God.This book is a more kind and gentle look at Toynbee. All the essays are an appreciation and understanding of Toynbee that one might not find anywhere else. The chapters by the 12 contributors are: (1) Toynbee's achievement (2) Toynbee's life & thought: some unresolved questions (3) Toynbee: an historian's conscience (4) Toynbee's philosophy of history: his Christian period (5) Toynbee and the meaning of Athens and Jerusalem (6) Toynbee: the time traveller (7) Toynbee as a prophet of world civilization (8) "A Study of History" and a world at war: Toynbee's two great enterprises (9) Toynbee's interpretation of Russian history (10) Toynbee on the United States (11) Toynbee and Jewish history (12) Toynbee amended and updated (13) Working with Toynbee: a personal reminiscence This book is aimed at other academics, but will also appeal to the legion of Toynbee fans worldwide. |
