4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall, with a few shortcomings
This manual is not as custom as it claims to be, for two reasons: First, it covers nearly a decade of cars (and those after '97 have key differences from earlier models) so photos and details are often not of your car, but rather just a car like yours. Second, many parts of the body and engine are similar to many other cars, and at points throughout the book it feels like...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing but not great
The problem I have with Haynes manuals is that they are not super clear. The few diagrams and pictures they do have are too small and /or don't relate to the exact repair you need.

One good example is the directions for the Valve Cover Gasket replacement. In the two paragraphs that explain the process, it tells you TWICE to install the new rubber gasket...

This manual is not as custom as it claims to be, for two reasons: First, it covers nearly a decade of cars (and those after '97 have key differences from earlier models) so photos and details are often not of your car, but rather just a car like yours. Second, many parts of the body and engine are similar to many other cars, and at points throughout the book it feels like the authors just copied and pasted whole sections from another manual in the Haynes series.

This book would benefit from a section at the front where the engine is thoroughly diagrammed. I would like to be able to look at a series of photos and know how to identify every part of the car. Maybe even they could stoop to the level of giving us a sentence or two about what each part does. As it's set up now, I find myself flipping between chapters a lot to find where a particular engine component is located.

For more advanced mechanics, those suggested components aren't necessary, I'm sure. But I get the impression that's not who this book is aimed at in the first place.

The problem I have with Haynes manuals is that they are not super clear. The few diagrams and pictures they do have are too small and /or don't relate to the exact repair you need.

One good example is the directions for the Valve Cover Gasket replacement. In the two paragraphs that explain the process, it tells you TWICE to install the new rubber gasket. This leaves the reader wondering where/when to apply the sealent. Do I apply it before putting the new rubber ring on or after, putting the glue on the rubber ring??

These manuals I feel are rushed to market and not thoroughly researched and clearly edited however, as I stated in my title, they are better than nothing and can give you a general sense of what is needed to make the repair.

Good luck.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more details, July 5, 2008

I've got 95 Toyota Corolla. Well, you know, covering 93-02 model years in one book is not enough. 50% of the book is not for my model year, so it's quite confusing and useless.

It would be more useful as a book if it had more pictures showing details.Covering 2 car brands for a 10 year period is one of the prominent drawbacks of this book. However it gives you enough information to get to know your car and its parts and do the periodic check-ups.Worth the money but not enough to be the only source for the home mechanic.

The Haynes Repair Manuals are well worth the money. Keep in mind these are not as detailed as the auto manufacturer's service manuals, but of course you are only paying a fraction of the cost as the manufacturer's service manuals. These manual include most anything a weekend mechanic needs. They include several photos of repair procedures, tune-up specifications, torque specifications and electrical wiring diagrams for your vehicle. There are times the Haynes manuals lack some detail of your vehicle, but overall they are a good buy. I would recommended these manuals for most people. I always buy one for every vehicle I own.

I ordered this shop manual to work on a friend's Corolla and it has served me well for a complete brake job (so far). The Haynes manuals are easy to understand and offer step-by-step processes that make car maintenance and repair easy, even for a rank amateur like me.

I wanted to know more about my 2000 Corolla. This book gives you mostly clear instructions on how to replace components of your car. I wish I could compare it to Chilton's version of the car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haynes Repair Manual - Corolla, November 11, 2011

This is an excellent repair & maintenance guide for the Toyota Corolla. It will by no mean take the place of a Factory Shop Manual.....which are not cheap or widely available....but it will guide you through numerous maintenance and repair tasks, often better than the Factory Manual in some cases such as replacing light bulbs and other hands on tasks that Shop Manuals seem to take for granted that folks already know most of the steps. The photos in this Haynes Manual are what makes it such a great manual for the masses. Clear and concise, and exactly what the car owner will come up against in maintenance & repair tasks. Worth the money, and then some !!

Great condition and timely delivery. Haynes manuals leave a lot to be desired as compared to say a Bentley manual for a VW product, but hey, at least this one was inexpensive.
