Book Description

September 15, 2006
Toyota’s legendary FJ40, the rugged off-road two-door Landcruiser introduced in 1960, sold more than one million models in its lifetime—and is still in service in the roughest parts of the world, nearly a quarter of a century after the last one rolled off the assembly line. As Toyota prepares to roll out its new version of this classic, this book offers a close-up, behind-the-scenes look at the development and production of the new FJ Cruiser, a retro 4x4 that combines its famous predecessor’s unparalleled style with solid off-road capabilities and all the convenience and comfort that today’s technology offers.

With interviews from the designers, engineers, and executives involved in making the FJ Cruiser, as well as more than 150 photos of the new vehicle and details on the 4x4’s specifications, this book puts readers into the driver’s seat of Toyota’s next classic Cruiser.

Review

Petersen’s 4 Wheel & Off-Road, April 2007

“Even FJ Cruiser owners need something to read when they have finished their monthly issue of 4-Wheel & Off-Road and are waiting for the next month's issue to arrive. So check out Toyota FJ Cruiser by Larry Edsall available through Motorbooks. It covers everything from design photos to technical drawings.”

From the Inside Flap

Whether it was transporting relief workers and peacekeepers, miners and missionaries, or everyday explorers, the 1960s-era FJ40 was known as the vehicle that could go–and return from—any extreme environment.

Toyota has now revived the passion and pioneering spirit of the original FJ with its newest offering: the 2007 FJ Cruiser. Engineered to carry on the tradition of the legendary Land Cruiser family, the new FJ Cruiser is designed to conquer anything Mother Nature has to offer—both on and off the road.

Author Larry Edsall chronicles the story of the 2007 FJ Cruiser in this book, giving four-wheeler fans an exclusive look at how the classic FJ has been reborn for the twenty-first century.

I am a bright yellow Toyota FJ Cruiser lover whom greatly enjoys this book. It is a perfect reference to accompany the owner's manual as it explores the vehicle's history, engineering, designs, and much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the FJ Enthusiast, May 1, 2009

I can remember the first time I saw a Toyota FJ40 as a child. It was love at first sight. I was so excited when I saw the concept FJ Cruiser in 2003.

When the FJ Cruiser was released in 2006, I was quick to get one. It was everything I dreamed of and more.

This book is a great history of the FJ Cruiser and the modern SUV in general. There are so many things that I learned about this truck, and other vehicles like the Jeep, and Land Rover. This details the FJ since its birth during the Korean War to modern day.

One of my favorite areas of the book, is how they detail the design process for the modern FJ Cruiser. While the FJ Cruiser is cool on its own, some of the design ideas that didn't make it just completely WOW you.

This book is the perfect gift for an FJ Cruiser or FJ40 owner. Or just a great way to learn about a historic vehicle. (Toyota wouldn't be the company it is today if it weren't for the FJ)
