This is one of the best books written on the subject of A3 and PDCA. There are three things to point out about this book, (1) very easy to follow, (2) examples were provided to strengthen the content, and (3) the book could be used as a roadmap to efficiently and effectively create an A3 with ease.

1. Easy to follow: This book was written in a language that is easy to follow. Anyone from a new-to-LSS practitioner to a seasoned practitioner will find the concepts outlined helpful and easy to implement. This book does not rely on heavy concepts to relay its message. It's simplicity is its strength.

2. Examples: This book includes examples to drive home concepts. A great example of this can be found in chapter 9 (Root Cause Analysis). The author not only explains the 5-Whys but also provide examples.

3. Roadmap: This book takes all of the guess work out of creating an A3. The author lays out a simple plan for the creation and execution of the A3. Any practitioner can pick up this book and create an A3 with no problem at all.

This book is a great resource for the process improvement community.

I bought this book a while back but had forgotten about it in my Lean library. I thought the book would be very manufacturing, but not at all. This is, in my view, the best book to understand problem solving and A3. The language is simple, to the point. I teach A3 and Lean for Government at the University of Ottawa (Canada) and I highly recommend this book to the participants. Even after several years in Lean and having read many, many Lean books, I'm happy to still find great resources.

Toyota’s 8 - Steps to Problem Solving by Robert H. Goldsmith, is an easy-to-understand read, with a clear and concise approach to using A3 Thinking and PDCA problem solving. It ’s certainly an appropriate resource guide for any problem solver, regardless of their level, the type of problem, or the industry in which they are working. I am looking forward to reading his book, Managing for Daily Improvement in Healthcare.

Really enjoyed the read. It was written in a way that anyone interested in advancing their critical thinking skills can understand more importantly apply. Much of the experience from this type of work is earned through doing. Bob has managed to take some of his experience infuse it in the "Take Away" section of each chapter to aid in shortening some of that learning curve. One really important element to this book is the many multi industry and complexity examples. To show how this can be used across the board whether at home or at work really helped the reader relate. Hope to read more of his books in the future!!!!!

Bob has once again hit a homerun with this short synopsis for problem solving. After several years of utilizing A3's in the Grand Rapids (MI) Fire Department, I have begun coaching others in this methodology. Until now, the materials available were way to in depth for individuals not in a quality position. This text allows learners to understand the basic concepts of an A3 and start using this thought process immediately. Mr. Goldsmith has a way of taking large amounts of information and decades of experience and presenting them in a non intimidating way. Keep the books coming, as I will surely purchase the entire series and keep them on my desk for frequent use.

I work in state government and our budget, like many public and private companies has been slashed over the previous 10 years and the necessity to scrutinize each and every process of our daily mission has now become a way of life. It has been a joy to introduce the problem solving methodology explained in this book to all areas of our work force. If you truly want an exponential return on your investment of time, which most agree is money, I would suggest readers of this review, introduce this book and both its simplistic and caring ways of problem solving to their coworkers from top to bottom. When many come together as one, success is surely to follow.

Bob has created a hands on 'here is how you do it' explanation of effective problem solving and critical thinking. Every organization needs a model they can follow to solve problems by getting at the root cause and putting permanent solutions in place. Bob's examples add clarity to the written descriptions and paint a vivid picture of effective problem solving. The 'Take Away' section at the end of each chapter pulls everything together in a few bullets and reminds the reader of key points. I like Bob's use of A3 Thinking tieing it to problem solving and culture.

Bob has managed to write an easy to understand, yet complete summary of Toyota’s problem solving methodology. Each topic in the book is defined and summarized, and then brought to life with examples. The “Take-Away” at the end of each chapter contains advice on practical application, and real nuggets from Bob’s years’ of experience. I appreciate Bob’s ability to clearly and simply communicate A3 thinking. I strongly recommend this book. I found it to be an enjoyable read.
