Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Apollo 16 (April 16 – April 27, 1972) was launched from John F. Kennedy Space Center and was the fifth manned lunar landing mission. The crew consisted of John W. Young as spacecraft commander, Ken Mattingly as command module pilot, and Charlie Duke as lunar module pi lot. Apollo 16 was the first scientific expedition to inspect, survey, and sample materials and surface features in the Descartes region of the rugged lunar highlands. Duke commenced the record setting lunar surface stay of 71 hours and 14 minutes by maneuvering the lunar module Orion to a landing on the rough Cayley Plains. Charles Moss Duke, Jr. (or Charlie Duke) a retired USAF Brigadier General, was a United States astronaut for NASA. He is one of only twelve men who have walked on the moon. In the 1998 miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon" Charlie Duke was portrayed by J. Downing. It was Charles Duke who left a plastic-encased photo portrait of his family on the moon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for space model collector, December 4, 2011

I was able to purchase the signed version at an extremely low price via Amazon.com. Don't waste your time with the Brookstone offering (Their cost for signed item is a flat $499 at time of writing). I ordered both the Amazon sold and Brookstone sold models and only the Amazon store sent the version with the signed base and case. Interesting point on signed version is the fact Mr. Duke signs the base Charles M Duke Jr. vs. Charlie Duke which I have seen on the majority of items he signs. Capsule is an outstanding reproduction minus a few issues with regard to the interior configuration to actual capsule.

The only issue I had was the Amazon packers left the box with the acrylic display open (may have been a return?) in the larger shipping box. This resulted in the display case fracturing on two sides in the shipping process. It would have been sent back for replacement if I had not been able to purchase for $169; however, I will not tempt fate in an exchange for fear of losing the deal.

The model is actually larger than what I expected, very durable and extremely detailed.
It comes with a stand modeled after the stands found at the Space and Science museum in Washington DC and is very sturdy, won't fall over.
This isn't a toy but more of a display piece. The hatch lifts off and the inside of the command module is visiable and equally as detailed as the outside.
Very good value for money if you are a collector or fan of the Apollo space missions.
