Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Northrop YB-49 was a prototype jet-powered heavy bomber aircraft developed by Northrop shortly after World War II. Intended for service with the U.S. Air Force, the XB-49 would feature a flying wing design. A flying wing is a tailless fixed-wing aircraft which has no definite fuselage, with most of the crew, payload and equipment being housed inside the main wing structure. This model is personally signed by Robert "Bob" Cardenas. In 1940, Cardenas became an aviation cadet. He graduated, received his pilot wings and was commission a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in July 1941. In 1942, Lt. Cardenas was sent to Twentynine Palms, California to help establish the Army Air Corps Glider School. He was assigned to Wright Field, Ohio and became a flight test officer. Cardenas rose quickly in position, was promoted to operations officer and finally director of the Flight Test Unit, Experimental Engineering Laboratory at Wright Field. In 1945, he started piloting experimental aircraft. He piloted a captured German jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262 and the Arado Ar 234 bomber. Cardenas also piloted the XB-42 Mixmaster and XB-43 Jetmaster. He was assigned chief test pilot for bomber aircraft and flew all prototypes of that class for the next four years. Then in 1948, Major Cardenas was the Officer in Charge of Flight Test Division at Muroc Air Force Base and was Chief Air Force Test Pilot of the Northrop YB-49 flying wing. The YB-49 was a jet-powered development of the piston-engined Northrop XB-35 and YB-35, the two YB-49s actually built were both converted YB-35 test aircraft. However, the YB-49 never entered production, being passed over in favor of the more conventional Convair B-36 Peacemaker piston-driven design. Cardenas continued to work in the field, retiring from the Air Force as a Brigadier General in 1973. Certificate of Authenticity included.
