Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator is an American torpedo bomber manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company in 1934. The TBD Devastator took its first flight on April 15, 1935, and started service for the U.S. Air Force in 1937. During its time, the aircraft was the most advanced plane operating for the U.S. Navy and also for various navies around the world. On June 25, 1937, around 114 TBD-1s were distributed by Douglas. The aircraft passed and became successful in all trials and combat exercises. An additional 15 aircrafts were ordered to replenish operational losses in 1938. The TBD-1 was the most advanced and effective torpedo bomber in the world. It was the first monoplane design ordered by the U.S. Navy for service, and was also the first all-metal aircraft with hydraulic or often called as folding wings. A total of 129 TBD-1s were developed, and were purchased by the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics. The TBD-1 equipped the carriers USS Saratoga, USS Enterprise, USS Lexington, USS Wasp, USS Hornet, USS Yorktown and USS Ranger. Later in 1941, the U.S. Navy assigned popular names for the TBD, and finally chosen “Devastator” as its name.
