5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to Stack, November 26, 2006
By
Beabea (Chicago, Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill Ding (Toy)
Bill Ding wooden balancing clowns have been around since the 1930s. You get nine clowns that are about 4 1/2 inches tall (2 red, 2 green, 2 blue, 2 yellow, 1 white). The clowns' feet, arms, shoulders, heads, etc are such that they can hook together so that you can stack them up or sideways. The challenge is to find new ways to stack them without them falling over. It's amazing the various ways that you can stack these things. You might consider buying two sets to stack them even higher. Overall, they are well made and fun to play with.

This is exactly what toys should be: No batteries; simple, educational, and fun. Balancing all of the men is challenging, and watching my 4 and 6-year-olds work their way up to more and more complex layouts was really awesome. And watching them figure out their own designs (ignoring the box), was also inspiring. Too many toys today depend on lights and sounds and have no real educational value. I'd like to give these as our "standard" birthday gift from now on...
(4 stars on durability because the edges get a little tiny big banged up after repeated usage; perhaps a harder wood or better paint job would have fixed this)

These are wooden clowns that can be stacked in many positions and provide hours of fun for all ages. My mother got them when I was a child, (many years ago!) and they are still in good condition. She keeps them out and when she has young visitors they always enjoy playing with them. I assumed that they no longer were sold and was delighted to find them on Amazon. Now I can have them for my young friends when they visit as well. They are colorful and sturdy and fun. You will never regret buying them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Dings.....more fun than a barrel of monkeys!, June 26, 2007

Young and the young at heart love to play with Bill Dings! A friend of mine has a vintage set we break out at gatherings. Once you start you just can't leave them alone. Kids learn about balance and success through trial and error stacking. The funny face on Bill Ding just makes you laugh. The more sets you have the more creative and challenging the stacking becomes. Get a set or two for the budding architect. A good time is had by all when Bill Ding is invited to stay and play.

I was delighted when a friend told me I could purchase this toy from amazon. My brother had Bill Dings when we were children many years ago. I have good memories of playing with this toy. I purchased them for my grandchildren and they love them. The first time I brought them out two of my grandsons, ages 11 and 9, played with them for about 2 hours. Now my 3 year old granddaughter wants to play Bill Dings but knows that this is a special toy that Grandma keeps on the shelf. I know all 6 of my grandchildren will find many happy hours playing with these balancing men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Bil-ding, February 5, 2008

This toy harkens back about 55 years to my own childhood. I recall the awesome task of making the toy grow into different shapes. I am so pleased to have the chance to let my grandchildren explore with it. The older ones build and the younger ones are enchanted by the colors and lay it flat on the floor and call it a puzzle. I throw it into a sack and bring it to any gathering where children are present. It never fails to enchant them and we adults can visit. I bought two sets so there are enough for sharing.

This is a great building toy. My 5 and 7 year old boys love it. They like to time themselves while they master each formation shown on the box. The bright wooden clown blocks interlock at the shoulders, head, feet etc. It is also great for younger kids.

(Not quite as durable as the Bill Ding toy when I grew up), these building toys sit on my science room desk for students to create new stacks. They don't realize they learn about center of balance and levers in a creative way. Bill Ding gets repeated daily teenager use and are replaced each year. This is a fun toy.

Being 65 years old and grandfather of 5, all under 6 yrs old I was amazed to find these wonderful blocks to be just as entertaining for my grandchildren as they were for me 60 years ago. And, just imagine, no batteries required!
