Coralie Clement
"Toystore" (Compass Records, 2009) ------------------------------------- Coralie Clement is one of France's finest and most reliable indie rock artists, a beautiful singer with an unerring sense of how to bring a song to life. This is her third solo album, working with her brother, composer-arranger Benjamin Biolay as her producer. While her two previous records had more of a fluid, guitar-pop rock feel, this has a kookier feel, with playful arrangements and a bunch of unusual instruments -- Farfisa organs, ukuleles, toy pianos and coronets, etc. Clement makes is all feel just right, gently drawing you into each song with her warm, melodic tones. If you've heard some of the more impish new French indie artists, Mathieu Boogaerts for example, you might want to check this disc out as well. It's pretty cool.
