Although it was not issued as a single, Teddy's majestic and powerhouse cover version of Ashford & Simpson's "Is It Still Good To Ya?" is one of his most dramatic and powerful performances--so much so, in fact, that it's the CD's crown jewel. "Love TKO", "Can't We Try?" and Teddy's duet with Stephanie Mills "Feel The Fire" were the big hits but "Is It Still Good To Ya?" is the real reasonfor buyuing this CD. NOTE: this U.K. import contains three bonus tracks not featured on the U.S. version plus better sound quality.

One of the most soulfoul songs I have ever heard is "Love TKO". Hearing him sing and moan at the same time, is Teddy at his best!

5.0 out of 5 stars TKO, March 7, 2008
This review is from: Tp (Audio CD)
Throughout the years no matter if the conversation was about Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, all the way to R.Kelly, people always told me to check out Teddy Pendergrass. I met up with a saxophone player in some old club two sundays ago, and our conversation was about R&B, and of course he started mentioning about Teddy Pendergrass and his famous Ladies Night Only concerts that I have heard many times from other people. Strangely enough in the mix of things I never heard of a Teddy Pendergrass album. After he told me that his wife used to go to Teddy's concerts and that was one day of the year that she did not want anything to do with him my curiosity sparked up and I went out and bought the TP album. When I first saw the cover of this album I was thinking to myself if you a wearing 5 gold chains and don a million dollar smile you better deliver playa. I put this old school joint on and from the first song "Is it Still Good To Ya" I said to myself this guy is a piece of work and I am here for a nice ride. When the ride was over I concluded that this album was a 5 star without a doubt. This is among the top R&B albums I have heard when it comes to slow jams. It's a perfect R&B album. He has some duets with Stephanie MilIs that added to whole album. Usually I do not like many duets, but this seems to work quite nicely since it made it more of a love vibe. It's well produced, and the musicians on this album are top notch. It has that tight early 80's feel that every note is right on the money. This is slightly before the era of sequencers. It has got good dance songs like "Girl You Know", "Take Me In your Arms Tonight", "I Just Called To Say". The slow songs are incredible. "Love T.K.O." with a steady low bass line that makes me understand why ladies go crazy for this teddy bear adorned in gold. One of my favorite track was "Can't We Try", which has soulful expressions. His voice has a baritonal velvet quality that can say more in 5 notes than some singers can say in a whole song. He feels each word as it is evident that he is no longer singing, but he is making love to the microphone. This man is dangerous, and if you find a TP album in your wife's possession do yourself a favor and lock it away in a closet. You do not want Teddy passionately singing alone in your girls ear about promises of adoration while you are away from home working. Come dinner time you have to answer to your women a whole lot of crap you do wrong. You give her the wrong answer and she'll knock you down the floor and leave you their cold. After you pick yourself up you and put the track "Love T.K.O." on you'll hate Teddy... and at the same time love Teddy.

5.0 out of 5 stars At his Prime, July 18, 2001
By
This review is from: Tp (Audio CD)
While his roots are definatly in the south, and style of Al green. This is Teddy at his prime. I can remember playing this LP back then at clubs. Put on for a closing song Feel the fire and many a person never left alone. If your a lover of from the heart music this is a must have cd. A lot of people where never aware that teddy was actually the lead singer for Harold melvin and the bluenotes. Who where a very big hit in their own right. What a lot of people unless fans of this gendre did not know is that Harold had left the band years before any huge commercial hits. The lead singer job became teddys and the band continued to realease records under the old name. I still attribute the rise of such greats as Luthor Vandross, Peobo bryson and others to the ground that Al green laid down, and teddy continued. If you love from the heart soul, and have an hour or so to spare as thereis no 3 mins songs here. Then this is a must have cd
