Top R&B release this year,
This review is from: Tp3 Reloaded (Bonus Dvd) (Clean) (Audio CD)
This is by far the hotest album out right now next to the ying yang twins. Every song brought a unique and fresh flavor that kept tempting you to listen to each song 100 times. Excellent album, "Playas Only" was fenominal along with the dramatic soap opera of "Trapped In The Closet" pts.1-5. Very few of the songs in this album left you bored. This is definetly R.Kelly's greatest masterpiece ever. He will be getting a couple of grammy's for this extreme release.

In all honesty I previewed this album many times-online,in record stores and passed it up every time. And there's for it. A lot of modern R&B performers get straight to the point with their music. With R.Kelly he borrows from his forebearers (Stevie Wonder,Marvin Gay,Jam & Lewis, etc) in the sense even his most commercial tunes take much time to build to their best. That being said this is actually a great album-one his strongest and most ambitious as well. And for me anyway it's the strongest of the "12 Play" series thus far. And there's a new outlook here as well. The previous two albums in the series put much emphasis on it's slower content and the carnal side of life. Here the tempos are,if not all the up all the time are at least more varied and the emphasis is often more on sexual curiousities and questions rather than mere seduction. It takes a more psychosexual look upon things in the mold of Prince to a degree. Sometimes even the point of forcing the artist himself to raise an eyebrow. Which,of course he does great wit as always.
To be said there's plenty of contempo hip-hop styled stuff here such as "Playa's Only","Put My T Shirt On" and "Hit Me Til The Mornin'". Though rather than looking towards some techno/European classical arrangement which is the typical route to travel musically these are contempo R&B cuts with heavy funk references such as polyrhythms and call and response lyrics. Of course for one of R's purely sophistifunk/boogie style numbers you'll want to go straight to the breezy "Happy Summertime" with Snoop Dogg, one of the best R.Kelly's done in the form and very much in the vein of Mariah Carey's Say Somethin, only with of course a far more naturally soulful vibe. "Kickin It With Your Girlfriend","Slow Wind" and "Reggae Bump Bump" all introduce heavier Caribbean and even reggaeton elements into his sound. Yes that was a bit trendy at the time but he does a great job building up and into them. The funny, lusty ballds "In The Kitchen" and "Sex Weed' alternately compares sexuality with first cooking a meal and than with "smoking spliffs". There's also the great mix of old and new rhythms on "Burn It Up" as well,a great retro/modern funk jam. The album concludes with a complex suit of five songs call "Trapped In The Closet" and this particular CD edition features a DVD with the 20 minute music video which exactly visualizes the songs lyrical imagry. Set to a Stevie Wonder like jazz/R&B style suite (with a modern instrumental twist) the lyrics tell a narrative story directly describing a series of personal encounters and sexual affairs that all runs terribly amok and comes to an abrupt and surprising conclusion. It basically deals with how people always wind up in bad places in life when they have to keep inventing lies to cover over another. The title has a literal and figurative meaning since part of the narrative involves a homosexual tryst between two make characters and,in that area actually encourages honesty about ones sexuality (whatever it may be) over secrecy. Overall this album is one of R Kelly's most rhythmically complex, funky and satisfying albums to date as well as one of his most conceptually unified. And it will take maybe a couple full listens before it all sinks in. But it says a lot about this artists emotional and creative mind as well so it works on many different levels.

The CD was wonderful. I, however, thought I had bought the unedited versions and all of my cds came edited.

R&B Scrub,

R.Kelly is clearly one of the most overrated R&B singer/producers working in urban music today. On the production side he'll never hold a candle to the greats like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Babyface or Quincy Jones. Vocally Kells will never touch Johnny Gill, Brian McKnight, Joe and the late great Luther Vandross. In my opinion TP3: Reloaded has more misses hits and Kells has been on a slow decline since the amazing Chocolate Factory by getting worse with each CD. As with all my reviews I'll do a track by track by breakdown omitting tracks 15 -19 which is the Trapped In The Closet Chapters. Kells sounds horrible on the track vocally and I don't give a rat's ass if he's telling a story, if I want to hear then I'll get a book on tape. Trapped is nothing more than a throwback to radio and movie serials of the thirties that left you with a cliff hanger to the next week. Well here's my review:
1.Playa's Only feat. The Game - Scott Scotrch provides us with a killer beat but the track sounds like Home Alone Part 2 and The Game uses the same rap from How We Do. ** 1/2 2. Happy Summertime feat. Snoop Dogg - This is one is a little better and gives off more of a laid back style. *** 3.Sex In The Kitchen - This song is two years old and although it's catchy the lyrics are very corny and it sounded better live. ** 1/2 4.Slow Wind - Another song where he's just talking and not Singing, he should have put AnyMore Room on the CD instead of this one, but I already know this is going to be a song for the clubs. ** 1/2 5. Put My T-Shirt On - Although the lyrics are corny in this one, Kelly finally picks it up with this seductive song. *** 6.Remtoe Control - Another Winner and it's in the vein of You Remind Me Of My Jeep etc. *** 7.Kickin It With Your Girlfriend - Nothing but a trash talking number where Kells talks gibberish. ** 8.Reggae Bump Bump - I never really cared for Reggae but this song is actually pretty hot. *** 9. Touchin - This one needs to be a single. Even though neither Nivea nor Kells is that vocally strong this song is very sexual and one I'd play in the clubs. *** 1/2 10. Girls Go Crazy - Trash I hope this wasn't what The Best Of Worlds II was supposed to sound like. * 11. Hit It Till The Morning - Kells hooks up with Chi-town natives Twist and D0D for this one. Twista has a nice verse so that earns the song *** 12. Sex Weed - Another Corny Pillow Talk song but it's a winner considering it has a nice beat and R.Kelly shows he's the only one who can get away with this. *** 13.Sex Love Is What We Makin - Standard R. Kelly song but nothing special even though it's one of the better slow cuts on the CD. **** 14.Burn It Up - This Reggae ton flavored track is one of the better songs on the CD before you get to that BS that is Trapped. All in all I would say skip this one and download it unless you're an R.Kelly biter and rider and pick up Raheem DeVaughn's The Love Experience instead.

12 play it ain't,
This review is from: Tp3 Reloaded (Bonus Dvd) (Clean) (Audio CD)
well, i finally listened to the tp-3 reloaded cd(thank god i didn't actually buy it) and i have to give it 3 stars. The only thing that kept this cd from getting 2 stars(and people buying it) is the 4 or 5 slow songs that are classic slow songs. When R-kelly tries to do anything else such as reggae it doesn't work. let me break it down for you(excluding playas only and the trapped in the closet saga):
1.Happy Summertime- 2.5/5- when i first heard this song i thought i had put in the happy people cd. Snoop being on the song doesn't help at all. 2. Sex in the Kitchen- i can't even rate cuz its soo old. it was good when i first heard it like 2 years ago. 3.Slow wind-3/5-its not my favorite but i can really see djs blasting this in the club. Though it is the stronger reggae cut on this cd. 4.Put my t-shirt on-4/5- kinda like sex in the kitchen but without the food. it is a good song though. The beat is very sexy. 5.Remote Control-4/5- i like this song. its very sexy especially with the play on words(u can only imagine). 6. Kickin it with your girlfriend-0/5- such a very stupid song. its very obvious he ripped off the very much played out Confessions saga with Usher, which usher did better. 7.Reggae bump-1/5- i hate this song. the beat is very wack. he doesn't sing hardly but does that whole talking thing that hes gettin known for. The beat is retarded and i don't mean that in a good way. 8.Touchin-4/5- one of the better songs on the record. its very mellow and slow. 9.Girls go crazy-1.5/5- obviuosly a left over from the botched best of both worlds 2 with baby. horrible song. 10.Hit it till the morning-4/5- nice ridin song. Twista, D.O.D, and the beat really make this song great. This should be his next fast single. 11.Sex Weed-5/5-great song. Once again a song with a play on words but its really very sexy and has a hint of the old R.kelly that we all love. 12. sex love is what we makin-4/5-classic R. kelly . nuff said 13.Burn it up-3/5- okay reggae but r. kelly needs to stick to what he's known for and leave the reagge to the pros. |
