Editorial Reviews

Très Chic! is the sequel to C'est Chic!, the top-selling celebration of French girl singers of the 1960s released on our Ace International imprint a couple of years back.

The collection spans the years 1964 to 1969 and is available in 24-track CD and 12-track deluxe vinyl album formats.

Serge Gainsbourg, eminence grise of Gallic girl pop, is represented on the CD version via Attends Ou Va-T'en by France Gall, Comment Te Dire Adieu by Françoise Hardy, Au Risque De Te Deplaire by Marie-Blanche Vergne, Les Papillons Noirs by Michèle Arnaud and Sous Le Soleil Exactement by iconic singing actress Anna Karina.

Other highlights include Tut, Tut, Tut, Tut, a cool French cover of US girl group the Lollipops' Busy Signal by Roger Vadim discovery Gillian Hills, and Jacqueline Taïeb's 7 AM, the rare English language version of her celebrated 7 Heures Du Matin.

Hand-picked titles by Annie Philippe, Elsa, Violaine, Pussy Cat, Brigitte Bardot, Delphine, Liz Brady, Valérie Lagrange and Violaine complete the set.

The accompanying 20-page booklet features an illustrated track commentary by Ace's in-house yé-yé fanatics Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart.

This is the second entry in Ace Records of England's "Chic" series devoted to the French girl pop singers of the 1960s. Leave it to Ace to explore brilliantly yet another niche in '60s pop music!

The two dozen songs here are amazingly catchy, well arranged and orchestrated, and the vocals are at the very least appealing and charming, ranging to flat-out superstar terrific in the case of Françoise Hardy. The best of the best on this disc is Hardy's «Comment te dire adieu» from 1968, Serge Gainsbourg's phenomenal transformation of a little-known Margaret Whiting "easy listening" record into a gorgeously grooving Gallic pop chef-d'oeuvre. On the very lightweight side of pop adaptation, we get native Brit Gillian Hills's positively adorable French-language take (titled «Tut, Tut, Tut, Tut») on the obscure 1965 American girl-group record "Busy Signal" by the Lollipops.

Serge Gainsbourg makes a few more behind-the-scenes appearances here, most notably as composer of the catchy and clever «Attends ou va-t'en» (1965) by teen star France Gall (who frequently recorded his airiest pop songs) and on the disc's closer «Sous le soleil exactement» (1967). This one is poetically enigmatic and intriguingly interpreted by Danish model/singer/actress (specializing in Jean-Luc Godard films) Anna Karina.

Young mononymic singer-songwriters Violaine and Elsa make major impressions with songs they co-wrote. From Violaine's 1966 début EP are her amusing take («J'ai des problèmes décidément») on the inevitable parental pushback faced by a teen girl when she starts to assert herself, as well as her strongly perceptive hommage («Il n'y a que des chansons») to contemporaneous Scottish folk-rocker Donovan.

The music is pretty good ye-ye - I like the C'est Chic record a little better, but maybe this will grow on me. I did want to say - because this is nowhere in the description - the vinyl edition of this is really really nice. Gatefold, with great color pictures and information on the inside. The vinyl itself is nice and thick and blue marbled! Really pretty. Worth it even if you only like one or two songs and are a vinyl hound.

I had bought the first Tres Chic! CD a year before and loved it and this follow up CD is great with a selection of more "swinging sixties" songs. The artists are a wide range of popular French singers of the time including love ballads, pop songs and even a jazzy fast paced Beat arrangement sung by France Gall. Groovy compilation of the ye-ye girls!
