Book Description

August 28, 2007
She's in search of JUSTICE.
Emily Wallace has no doubt about who killed her best friend ten years ago: Clint Austin, her then boyfriend. The key witness in his trial, Emily put Clint behind bars with her tearful testimony. But when Emily learns that Clint has been released on parole, she returns to her Alabama hometown to confront him--and make sure he never forgets the damage he has done.

He is dead-set on revenge…
After serving ten years for a crime he didn't commit, Clint knows only the truth can set him free. Ignoring warnings from his old friend, now the chief of police, Clint will let no one stand in his way as he tries to prove his innocence--including Emily, the girl he once loved who ruined his life. Prison has made him a hard man, yet he yearns for Emily…and he can see in her eyes that, in spite of herself, she feels the same. But even if he can convince Emily to trust him, it might be too late to clear his name--before the real killer strikes again.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran romance writer Webb plunges into the Olympic-sized romantic suspense pool with a fictional Alabama town, Pine Bluff, that has more secrets than the deodorant shelf at Piggly Wiggly. So it makes perfect sense when one of Pine Bluff's own, Clint Austin, returns from a 10-year prison stint to track down the killer whose crime he was pinned with. Meanwhile, Emily Wallace, whose damning testimony cinched Clint's conviction, has also come back to town, determined that Austin will continue to pay for his crime—after all, Emily herself caught him with his hands at the slashed throat of her best friend, Heather Baker. Complicating their adversarial relationship, Emily and Clint were an item in high school. That's the least, if most titillating, of the complications surrounding Heather's death. As first Clint, and then Emily, investigate the convoluted stories of that summer night, the real murderer is out to stop them. Skillfully managing a big cast, Webb keeps the suspense teasingly taut, dropping clues and red herrings one after another on her way to a chilling conclusion. (Sept.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 4.5 star romantic suspense, April 22, 2008
By
This review is from: Traceless (Mass Market Paperback)
After serving a decade in the toughest prison in the country for a murder he didn't commit, Clint Austin is on parole and back home to clear his name. He's lost everything - his freedom, his family, and most importantly, his sense of self when former crush Emily Wallace found him with the near lifeless body of her best friend and led the lynch mob that sent him to prison. But the town is not wiling to let bygones be bygones, and Emily is back in town to see that he violates his parole so that he can be sent back to Holman. Emily hates that she's still attracted to Clint, and has never really moved on from that violent night that destroyed her school girl crush and the person she once was. When she starts watching him and following him, she soon learns that he might actually have been set up and further investigation puts them both at danger since the real culprit wants to keep the secret of that night from coming to light.

This was my first time reading a book by this author and I will be reading anything else she writes. Taking material that has been used a dozen times, she manages to create a fresh and emotional story with a surprise ending. The chemistry between Clint and Emily sizzles off the pages; the anguish of Clint and the losses he suffered make him more than your typical misunderstood bad boy.

Emily and Clint aren't perfect, they're delightfully human and it's easy to see yourself in this nail-biting suspense novel. Debra Webb has created a complex plot with complex characters that is amazingly entertaining and easy to read and follow--and I did. In one sitting!
