Editorial Reviews

Review

Ken Doherty's Track & Field Ominbook was the benchmark for track & field textbooks from its first publication in 1971. Eventually, it saw four editions, with the last one going out of print in 1995. Doherty died in 1996. For several years, we sought an editor for the daunting task of bringing Ominbook into the new millennium. Every chapter had to be studied and most had to be updated. Finally, Dr John Kernan took up the challange three years ago and the new, revised and updated, 5th edition is hear. Not much tinkering has been done with Part I (The Human Side of Coaching), since Doherty's humane and sesible approach to the coach-athlete relationship has always been a hallmark of the book. Chapter 4 profiles some of the best coaches of recent times and a couple of new ones have been added since the 4th edition. In Parts II through IV, however, much has been added and changed to provide the latest ideas and methods of technique and training for each event. When appropriate, the best minds in the track community were consulted for input, so that, for instance, an overview of training for the 400 meters from Clyde Hart has been included, BYU's Craig Poole contributes rhythm and speed information for the hurdles chapter, and some of David Bussabarger's excellent sequence drawings of pole vaulters illuminate that event coverage. All event chapters are well illustrated and still include Doherty's historical analysis of how techniques developed and changed in each event over the years. --Track & Field News Publisher

About the Author

Ken Doherty (1905-1996) won a bronze medal in the 1928 Olympic decathlon and went on to become a highly regarded coach at Michagan and Penn. He directed and developed the famed Penn Relays for many years and was the meet director of the first USA-USSR dual meet. But it was as a track & field writer where he reached Hall of Fame status, and Track & Field Omnibook, a monumnental undertacking for one man, was his magnum opus. John Kernan, EdD, has 33 years experience as an educator and track coach. His collegiate coaching career includes stins at Baylor, Kansas Wesleyan, Heidelberg and Admas State, and he is now in his sixth year coaching at Pleasant Grove HS in Utah. He has been on the coaching staff of three Paralympic teams and the 2005 U.S. World Youth U16 team. He has contributed to several publications and still competes in masters track & field.

This review is from: Track & Field Omnibook (Paperback)
I am the sprint coach for a high school team. I heard about this book when MY HS coach told me about it earlier this year. He told me that when he used it, he had to go to the sport science library in Los Angeles (established during the 1984 olympics).

The beauty of this book isn't that it gives workout plans. The beauty is that it has sport journal articles that are track and field related and puts it together so that you can effectively incorporate training techniques and theory into practice. Also gives different perspectives on different techniques and the rationalization behind them.

The latest edition isn't as fancy as the old hard covers, but it has all ingredients with updated material (2007) with interviews with atheletes such as Jeremy Wariner.

Covers sprints, distance and all field events.

This is a must in any serious coach's library. This book has the culmination of 40 years of experience in our sport (first edition 1971)
