Trackmania. Those who have played this game on PC know how good this game is. Unfortunately this version on the Wii never received the praise it deserved which ultimately killed it's sales. Because every professional reviewer couldn't remove their heads from their rear ends and grade this game based on it's own merits and instead they slammed in every review. Why did it get slammed in every review? Because reviewers said that the graphics were horrible, no online community, and it doesn't have the plethora of user created content that the PC version has. No kidding! Compared to the PC, the graphics are of course not going to be nearly as sharp. The Wii version has almost no user created content because it's a different platform, and nobody bought the game due to the negative reviews so consequently the online community for this game is nonexistent. So needless to say if you're wanting to get this game for the online, STOP. Look elsewhere.

So why did I give the game 5 stars? Because the game is still awesome that's why. While there is no online community, there is still local split screen 4 way multiplayer. There is also the killer single player mode which I am a huge fan of. This game is fast. Fast and smooth 99% of the time with a little hiccup in the frame rate every now and then, but nothing even close to game breaking at all. The graphics are some of the best I've seen on the Wii to date. They are very clean, colorful, and detailed. Even after playing the PC version in 1024 X 768, I can say that the Wii version doesn't trail too far behind in the looks department. The sound is ok. The car sounds are a tiny bit glitchy sounding, but again nothing that takes away from the game. The music loses a lot of people.

When most think of the Wii's game line up, they categorize it to two sections, Nintendo games and shovelware. Which is rather unfortunate, because when little known PC franchises like Trackmania make the jump to the Wii it is easy to categorize it as shovelware. This is far from reality. All of the Trackmania games provide the gamer with loads of content including online play, track editors, a comparable single player, and now for the Wii local multiplayer. This game has solid controls with the Wiimote's tilt or Dpad, or if you desire a joystick you can play with a nunchuck. Okay now that we got the basics out of the way lets go to gameplay.

This is not like most racing games which gives it its charm. Most levels only last one to two minutes. What you do is race 3 or 4 ghosts to complete a speed run, and depending on the number of ghosts you beat unlocks medals that are used to unlock more maps. Pretty handy, because if you suck at a level you can just skip it and earn medals from a different level. Usually the first time you try the level you won't be able to unlock a high medal, for even the littlest mistake will cost you your placing. Games are won by fractions of a second and you will be hitting the redo button over and over again, which is the whole point of Trackmania, you are going for the perfect speed run.

This game can be played casually or with intensity due to the diversity of the maps and length of the single player. You can also build tracks and download them off the internet, increasing the game length. The track editor works perfectly and I have spent hours making my perfect map. It is tons of fun. If you want a deep racing game on the Wii this is my first choice. In order, this is my list of top racing games on the Wii: Trackmania, Excite Truck, Need for Speed Carbon, Excitebot, and Sonic All Star Racing. You can skip the rest of the games unless you are a hardcore Mario Kart fan.

I own the original TrackMania DS and that led me to pick this one up, and I am not disappointed in the slightest. More track types, more variety, more space and pieces to work with in the builder, just more fun overall.

If you haven't played Trackmania before, like me before I tried the DS one, the controls will be frustrating at first, but you'll get used to them soon. It's not a racing game necessarily, but more like a racing platformer. I love racing games, which is why I got the DS version, but I love this game for other reasons. The races are short, so it's easy to just keep trying to get the gold, and easy to say to yourself, "Just one more track..." Then there's Platform races, where they don't time you, but they count your restarts. Finally there's the track builder, which means, yes, you get to build the biggest jump of all time.

Usually the pitfall of racing games is the monotony. Somehow Trackmania manages to keep every race fresh and different even with hundreds of tracks using the same set of pieces.

Totally worth it. I think I'll have to pick up Build to Race for the DS now so I can play and build anywhere.

TrackMania is a game which the user creates his/her own track and then races on it. Some kids are not geared to create the track - this can be very time-consuming. Other kids, like my 11-year-old son, cannot get enough of it. He'll spend many hours over a few days or weeks just building the "perfect" track. Then he races on it. Then he does it all over again. He equates it as Minecraft for racing.

Consider this before you purchase. My 9-year-old loves to race on his brother's tracks but would never spend the time to make one from scratch. It all depends on the user.

A big hit at our house and at a great price.
