The book is about a boy whose parents died when he was little so he has to live with his grandparents on a farm. The boy and his grandfather always go deer hunting together every year. This year though they cannot go together because his grandpa has cancer. When the boy goes hunting he sees a deer and tracks it. Then he finds that he cannot kill it so then he thinks that if he could just touch it, it would heal his grandpa. Does it heal his grandpa? Does he even touch the deer? Read the book to find out. I really liked this book because I love being outdoors. On a scale from 1 to 10 I would rate this book an 8.

The story of Tracker is a very good one and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good heartwarming book. The plot of this book has to do with a boy who has to deal with the fact that his grandfather is dying and that he has already lost all his other family except his grandmother. He is a simple boy and lives in the country and has many chores but still has to go to school like every other kid. He has to haul out the manure from the cows with their team of horses when he sees this doe. Now normally when he sees a deer this close to deer season they are spooked and run away but this one is not afraid and just sits there and looks at him and he can't figure out what is so different about this deer. Of course like any boy his age he will go deer hunting but this year is different, this year he will have to go by himself instead of with his grandfather for support. He polishes his rifle the night before and has his place he is going to hunt all picked out but he don't know how great of a journey it is going to be. He goes out and his spot is perfect because the deer come fleeing out of the timber from the predators that try to kill them. He gets up in the cold winter morning early in the morning and does all his chores. He loves the smell of the cows and all the good things a farm kid enjoy. He gets done and goes out. He sees the same deer that he saw earlier and tracks her for a very long time and when he finally gets there. Well, you will have to just wait and see for yourself. But like I said earlier this book is good for anyone. Boys, girls, older people, younger people, everyone can see the goodness of this story once they read it and get the true meaning of what Gary Paulsen wanted us to get from this story.

I loved this book!!! If you like the outdoors and hunting and are looking for a quick read this is the book for you .The reason why I liked this book is because I love the outdoors and hunting.

This story is about John Born, his grandfather is dying of cancer and it is a family tradition to go hunting. There is absolutely no sport in hunting for the Born's; it is to put food on the table for the long winter. One day he is out fertilizing the fields and he sees a doe. This suddenly changes his feelings about hunting. The main phrase or you could say its theme is, "If I touch the deer, death will be cheated

If you read this book it would definitely help to be a boy considering it is about hunting.

Tracker, by Gary Paulson it is about a boy whose parents died in a plane crash and he's goes to his grandparents. He works on the farm. So later when his grandpa gets sick and so John, goes hunting for food and he followes a deer trail. Then in the clearing, stands a doe but he doesn't shoot it. The book is pretty good for a realistic fiction.

I felt I was back home, in my childhood days. I grew up in the country where people hunted and ate deer meat. This book was tender and sentimental for me.

I was sad because the grandfather was dying.

I love all of Gary Paulsen's books. Even though most of them are teen books (Murphy's Gold is adult), they are breathtaking, enjoyable books for me. He writes books about rural life.

This particular book was special. The grandfather was dying, but does the deer have to die?

I've been reading Gary Paulsen and liking his books, but this one... this one blows me away. It is just so good.

Tracker is a brief but stunning narrative about death and life, of coming to grips with the way things are. It's the story about a young teen, John, who lives with his grandmother and grandfather on a farm that has been in their family for generations. Like many of us John wants his life to remain stagnant, unchanging. But his grandfather has cancer. And he has been given less than a year to live.

It is with all of this emotional baggage that he heads out alone to hunt deer on the first day of the Hunting Season. It is the first time that he goes by himself, and the ensuing story brought me to tears.

Talking Points:::

Don't rely on my inability to do justice to this fine book. It's less than 100 pages long so read it!

The setting is in the near past, where hand pumps were still used indoors, and where wood heated homes on some farms in the U.S.

I highly recommend this book for the home shelves. It is absolutely the sort of book that you could read every decade only to find yourself discovering a new layer to think about.

That said, it's not a book I would necessarily recommend to kids or even some young adults. In my opinion, it's been mislabeled and should be listed as fiction for adults.

My 10 year old son, who does not like to read, read Tracker in 1 day. He loved it. This is the 2nd Gary Paulsen book he has read. I reccomend it for anyone who loves hunting and the outdoors.

There is a boy named John. He lost his parents when he was very young. He now lives with his grandparents. His grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and cant do much now. John now takes care of the farm. He and his grandfather go deer hunting every year together. Unfortunately not this year. He must go alone. He sets out very early in the morning to go get his deer. He follows a doe day after day after day. He never gets a chance to kill her but he gets a chance to touch her. He was unarmed too. He sets for home and his grandparents expecting his arrival.

Three things that I liked about this book is that its about hunting witch really attaches me to that book so really enjoyed reading it. I also liked how John took responsibility and helped out with the farm. I really liked how John looked at life all the way through this book. He looked at it in the best possible way. I really got bored of John always walking up to the deer getting close and the deer ran off. The vocabulary in this book was very childish, wasnt exactly up to my reading level. The characters became so lifelike to me after they described them to me with such detail. This book had a lot of relevance to me because Im a hunter witch made it very interesting. This book was very easy to read and I was up to a little bit more of a challenge.

I really recommend someone to read this book. Someone in middle school because its kind of hard. I especially recommend this to someone who really likes adventure book because its full of that.

This book came to me in mint condition. Gary Paulsen has been the favorite author of all my SIX boys. Giving this to my youngest for Christmas this year! No doubt he will love it!

I enjoyed this book very much because it really tells how I believe life in the wild is. However, I believe this is a book for older children as there is lots of gore in it when animals are killing for food. It is true to life and Paulsen doesn't leave anything out or sugar coat what is happening. Picturing the kill is very visual in the mind so be aware of lots of gory details if/when you let your young children read this book. I highly recommend the book if the child/person reading it is mature.
