Book Description

From New York Times bestselling author James Rollins comes a stirring story of a soldier and his military war dog who are drawn into a dark mystery tracing back to World War II and a lost treasure tied to the bones of the dead.

Off the streets in the medieval heart of Budapest, Captain Tucker Wayne and his war dog, Kane, rescue a mysterious woman fleeing three armed men. The secret she holds will unlock a terrible treasure, one steeped in blood and treachery, tied to a crime going back to the fall of Nazi Germany and a heritage of suffering and pain that reaches out from the past to wreak havoc today. In a final showdown in the depths of a lost cemetery, truths will be unearthed, treasures exposed, and the fate of all will rest upon the shoulders of one man and a dog whose courage is beyond measure.

Included with this thrilling story is sneak peek at Bloodline, where the further exploits of Tucker and Kane will be revealed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Former Army Ranger Tucker and his amazing dog Kane make for absolutely riveting reading in this page-turner of a genetic mystery. James Rollins really outdid himself this time. Readers get to experience what it's like to walk in the paws of a super highly trained military dog, and the deep bond between military dog and handler. I look forward to more James Rollins books with this intrepid pair. Four paws up!"

From the Author

Biography:

James Rollins is the New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers, translated into more than forty languages. His Sigma series has been lauded as one of the "top crowd pleasers" (New York Times) and one of the "hottest summer reads" (People Magazine). In each novel, acclaimed for its originality, Rollins unveils unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets--and he does it all at breakneck speed and with stunning insight.

Known for building high-octane adventures on a solid science foundation, Jim juxtaposes the familiar with the exotic and then turbo-charges his tales with suspense. Always mindful of historys legacy, Jim reveals how secrets, some hidden for centuries, can change the course of human events. His novels explore how advancing technology can impact society not just by the physical threats of unchecked developments, but also the spiritual and moral challenges that result. The true terror of technology is not the cogs and the wheels, but how it will change us, he says.

Explosive Page-Turning Adventures:

As a boy, James Rollins immersed himself in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps featuring The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger. From there sparked the desire to become a writer himself. Already an accomplished storyteller, spinning elaborate tales that often were at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters, Jim went on to hone his writing skills.
Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, however, Jim pursued a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary clinic in Sacramento, California. This hands-on knowledge of, and interest in, medicine and science help shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins' books apart.

When Jim is not writing, touring, giving seminars, or making presentations, he can be found spelunking, scuba diving, hiking, and/or traveling. Jim and his two- and four-legged family members live amid chew toys and paleontological treasures in the Sierra Mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another exciting adventuer June 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow! What a great teaser to the soon-to-be-released novel Bloodline by James Rollins. If you have been following his Sigma Force series, don't miss this short story as the adventures continue and we get to meet two amazing new team members. Tucker and Kane (a soldier and his war dog) are partners just like Gray and Monk. Though I'm not sure either would want to be compared to a dog. But Kane is no ordinary dog, Rollins makes you feel as though he is almost human.

This seemingly basic character introduction is anything but basic. Tucker is an ex-soldier who has seen too much tragedy. Kane is his partner, best friend, and an extention of himself, without whom Tucker couldn't have made it out alive. They saved countless lives in the past and now, while trying to save another, get two for one.

Once again Rollins takes us on an exploration of an exotic city, Budapest. Here Captain Tucker Wayne and Kane have come to lay low. However, fate has other plans. A woman who stands out too much seems to be running from someone. Men who try to blend in are obviously after someone. As they pass the partners, laying low gives way to a need to rescue. You will fall in love with this incredably smart, tough, and loving dog.

Learn facts about war dogs, their training and their jobs that will have you envious and proud. You may even fall for Tucker, he's cute too.

5.0 out of 5 stars UltimateTeamwork June 6, 2012

For many years I've followed and read James Rollins' wonderful, adventurous novels. I pegged him right from the start comparable to the author Clive Cussler. I'm thrilled that this short story introduces a canine hero. Clive Cussler usually included one breed of dog in several of his books: the dachshund. Tucker and his devoted war trained dog, Kane, are real heroes in this short story after they both leave the military service. Saving a woman from being captured while she seeks her missing father, leads the three characters into an underground cavern where treasures have been hidden for decades. Shades of Indiana Jones having a new partner (Kane) jumped into my brain. I like this new team; I want to read more like this from one of my most favorite authors (ex-veterinarian), James Rollins. And, James, have lots of adventures with your new dog. Hope he inspires you to write more such great stories such as "Tracker."

5.0 out of 5 stars Doggy Thriller! April 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of those rare books that a dog is one of the main characters! I've only read two authors in my life that have been able to deliver a story that perfectly describes a day in a doggy's life. James Rollins and Stephen King! Both giants in their own genres! This story is a compacted thriller! If you're looking for something to pass about an hour.. this will satisfy that itch! The characters come to life easily as you read along with this little thriller! A soldier and his military dog come to the aid of a woman who clearly needs assistance in helping her save her father's life. Once again.. Rollins DELIVERS!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, suspenseful, well written June 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Most of what I read is indie fiction, so the work of a seasoned professional really leaps out at me when I finally have it in hand. Smooth, well polished prose should be the rule, not the exception.

I would love to know if a dog really can be trained to do all the things the dog in this story does. I never did get around to googling that to find out. This dog not only recognizes an incredible number of verbal commands, he also seems to be able to think.

Even if it has never happened in real life and even if it never could or will, I'm willing to suspend disbelief. This dog is one of the best protagonists in the entire thriller genre (okay, I admit, I seldom read this genre).

I'd read more of this series just for the dog. The rest of it is the usual stuff of thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special forces dog story July 18, 2012
By Ronna
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella introduces two new characters to James Rollins' Sigma Force novels. Tracker, and his dog, Kane, are a special forces trained team who served in the middle east wars. Now they are an Independant team working wherever the choose. How they became Independants is a mystery, yet unsolved in this book. We follow them through Budapest, Hungrary as they help a wandering woman who has come to help her father find stolen wealth from their Jewish compatriots. There are others who have a different outcome planned. The interaction between Tracker and Kane is educational and fascinating considering the man&dog teams being used in fighting situations these days! Looking forward to continuing their thrilling adventures in BLOODLINES!
