More About the Author

John Jeanneney majored in geology at Dartmouth College. After working as an exploration geologist he went on to Columbia University, where he received a PhD in European History. Research for his dissertation on French forest history, which was funded by a Fulbright scholarship, took him to the French National Forestry School for a year. There he also investigated European methods of deer hunting.

Back in the United States he taught history for 31 years at Hofstra University. Besides history his other passions include hunting and wirehaired dachshunds. He has a deep commitment to finding ways to reduce the loss of wounded big game. In 1976 he received a research permit from New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate the feasibility of using leashed tracking dogs when deer and bear could not be found by other means. The success of this research project led to the legalization of tracking dogs in his own state and subsequently in many others. As a hunter he has published numerous articles and a widely selling book, Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer. He has given numerous workshops, seminars and presentations on wounded deer tracking. Every year John tracks wounded deer and bear for local hunters and takes over 30 "deer and bear calls". He is a co-founder of Deer Search Inc., United Blood Trackers Inc. and North American Teckel Club.

John resides with his wife Jolanta in Berne, located in the Helderberg Mountains of New York State, where they breed wirehaired dachshunds for blood tracking and hunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information!!, January 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer (Paperback)
What a great book for a begginer tracker like myself, all the way up to an experienced veteran. I couldn't put it down and cannot wait until my puupy arrives to begin his training. Cover to cover this book is filled with everything you need to know to start tracking as well as how to maintain a good tracking dog. Not only that, there is great detail on wounds and how to identify what kind of wound you may be tracking. I would highly reccomend this book to any tracker or hunter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, March 27, 2011
This review is from: Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer (Paperback)
I can't imagine a better book on this subject! My copy is dog-eared, highlighted and underlined from continually going back to try to absorb all the important information. Full of invaluable training and tracking info gathered from many years of documented work by Mr. Jeanneney, it will save you from a thousand mistakes you'd make without the knowledge you'll gain from within these pages. This book takes you from picking and training a pup right through advanced tracking techniques. Quite simply, there is no comparison--this is the book you MUST read if you're interested in helping hunters track wounded game with a dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, March 27, 2011
This review is from: Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer (Paperback)
My brother bought this book for me because he knew I was considering purchasing a tracking dog. It covered everything including breed selection and all aspects of training. My tracking dog "Blue" is now nearly 8 months old and is doing great, in large part because I knew what I needed to do to train her and what to expect from her under a variety of tracking circumstances. She successfully tracked 9 deer in her first season, including her first which was a 700 yd track when she was just 14 weeks old! We are now implementing additional training techniques during the off season and starting her on rabbit hunting. This book is a must have resource for anyone considering a blood tracking dog.
