OK, Not as comprehensive and meaty as the title/era promises,

There ARE scads of good photos in this book, a few great ones, but as I moved through it I wondered: What was holding the author back? Time/era-wise, and location-wise, I figured a veritable "mother lode" of action shots of some of my favorite early 50's roads with steam and 1st-genesration diesels in their heyday...using the 'Quad Cities" as the epicenter. I was salivating. Well it delivered...sort of. My 2 biggest gripes were: 1) Too many photos of static/roster type photos around the same location in the quad cities. I began to wonder, "I'm at page XX, when's he gonna move on to other locations?" 2) Too many photos that were poorly ( or less than optimally ) composed "second string" type shots. Given that most of the photos by the photographer in this book were well composed...that is, he knew his photographic stuff technically/composition-wise, I got the feeling that some of the photos were of the cutting-room floor variety. Some shots that could have been knock-outs, in both location and subject were made less so by snapping the shutter way too soon: All too often I see shots of the train occupying only a quarter or so of one side of the frame....as if many shots were taken, but the good stuff was not available for whatever reason.Still a good book with many good photos that I can't say I'm sorry I bought...I guess my expectations were too high.
