Back and Better than Ever,
By "mismoravec" (IA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tracy Lawrence (Audio CD)
Tracy Lawrence is back and better than ever. Tracy's self titled album is quite possibly his best work yet. "Tracy Lawrence" is quite different from his albums of the past. The album boasts a more paired down and traditional country sound. It's very reminiscent of his "Sticks and Stones" ablum. I enjoyed the entire album and by the 3rd play, I found myself singing along. I found the whole album to be phenominal and it's hard to simply describe a few favorite songs. Honestly, they're all becoming my favorites. "I won all the Battles" is a very inspiring look at relationships and the realization that winning the argument doesn't always mean winning in the end. "Getting Back Up" truthfully depicts the pain of a relationship ending and the hardship of starting your life over again. Tracy's self titled album also brought with it some feel good songs that you just can't help but tap your foot along to. Among them are; "Life Don't Have to be so Hard", "God's Green Earth" and "She Love the Devil out of Me". On the sweet romantic side was "Meant to Be", it's the kind of song you hope your significant other plays for you. And I can't not mention "What a Memory". This song is based around a story of a mother's dying wish. The song borders on sad and very deep and it grows on you. The more you listen to it, the more you'll be impressed with the writing and the quality of Tracy's vocals. I would recommend Tracy's self-titled ablum to everyone, from his most dedicated fan and to that country fan looking for a little change of pace. You won't be disappointed, it's worth checking out.

Simple is Better,
By Matt Riggins (Athens, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tracy Lawrence (Audio CD)
Tracy Lawrence, credited with hits such as "Alibis," "If the World Had a Front Porch," "Time Marches On," and "Lessons Learned," is back in full force with an album that is sure to touch the heart of any true country music fan. In this self-titled album, the Arkansas native stated that he wanted to "explore his country roots and to get back to the basics of country music,"and has succeeded in doing so. The album opens with the delightfully fun "Crawlin' Again" which describes the primal need men have for a woman's love. Next, he leads into a chain of ear-catching melodies including his current single "Life Don't Have to be so Hard," the sweet "Meant to Be," the foot-tapping "She Loved the Devil Out of me", and the lyrically clever "GOD's Green Earth." Tracy's "All Over It" will remind listeners of Alan Jackson's hit "Right on the Money," while "It's Hard to Be an Outlaw" and "Whole Lotta Lettin' Go" describes Tracy's attempt to overcome his past ghosts. Two songs that really stand out and scream for attention are "Getting Back Up" and "What a Memory." Both songs have a heart-wrenching effect and are the epitome of the soul of country music. "Getting Back Up" describes the heartache and trials of a man's struggles to regain his footing after a relationship gone sour. "What a Memory" narrates a touching story of a dying mother's love for her only son. These two ballads will no doubt take Tracy to the top of the charts. I for one found this album a refreshing return to the elements that made country music such a dominant force in the music industry. It skillfully avoids the pop-country blend that Nashville seems to be adopting. Tracy filtered through the dirt and sand that country music has evolved into and has found a golden nugget with this album. Not only is it inspiring for the soul but is even better for the ears.

Smooth Listening,
By Thomas H. Wilkins (Youngstown, OH) - See all my reviews

Tracy Lawrence has done a fine job in what is probably the best country album of 2002. With smooth vocals, catchy instrumentals, and just an overal wonderful variety of songs, this album is by far Tracy's best to date. I also own his Greatest Hits cd, and this one is the superior of the two. I don't know how county radio will repsond to it, now that they no longer play real country, but country music fans will love it.

Country Fever,

Tracy Lawrence has done a great job with this album. He has successfully managed to stick with the winning formula that's made him one of country music's most loved artists, and from his choice of songs, had fun in doing so. His voice is clear, and even demonstrates his trademark "growl" in several of them. This album is a keeper in my books.

Something For Everyone!,

Tracy Lawrence's new cd is exactly what country music needs more of--country music! Today's country music is so full of pop sounds, that it's getting hard to differentiate who's country and who isn't, leaving everyone to question, "what is country music?" But with this album, you need to look no further. These songs will touch your heart and give you a feel of what real country music should be like.

Not his worst...not his best...,
By Gennie Bailey (Savannah, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews

"Tracy Lawrence" is a far cry from the worst album Tracy Lawrence's released, but it's also not the best either. Lawrence hasn't had a real hit album since the 1997 release of "The Coast Is Clear", which boasted some major hits as "Better Man, Better Off", "While You Sleep", and "How A Cowgirl Says Goodbye". Since then, Lawrence has had minor, forgettable career hits. I'm afraid that this album may be included in that category. "Tracy Lawrence" begins with well enough with the rockin' "Crawlin' Again" and the down-home "Life Don't Have To Be So Hard". The third cut,"It's Got You All Over It", reminds you of an old Don Williams tune with it's layed back vocals and twangy almost jazzy mix. It's pleasant enough, but Tracy's voice teeter-tots just a bit. Other hits I enjoyed were: "God's Green Earth" and "Whole Lot of Lettin' Go". The songs I had a problem with include: the wishy-washy "Meant To Be", "That Was Us", and "She Loved the Devil Out of Me". I just couldn't get into these songs for some reason. Who knows? Maybe they'll grow on me. The best cuts off the album is without a doubt "Getting Back Up". The cut will undoubtfully be the big hit of the album and should get some ample airtime (if radio PD's are half as intelligent as we asume them to be). It's a great song that is sort of ironic considering Lawrence's battle with the bottle and "alleged" spousal abuse from a few years ago. He sings the song like he truly believes every word coming out of his mouth. It's a keeper! Definantely words to live by. All-around, "Tracy Lawrence" isn't a bad album. For the most part I enjoyed listening to it, but it's not as good as his older work, if you want my honest opinion. My advice to Tracy Lawrence...study your older material and stop recording music the label pushes at you. Use better judgement next time and you'll have another hit record on your hands. Not bad for Top 40,

A Music City dude who sticks pretty closely to a hard country vibe -- which is to say, a Nashviller whose whole album I can listen to without having my blood pressure rise too high. He's poppy and claculated, but Lawrence mainly follows in the traditionalist path laid down by John Anderson and Randy Travis. He also traffics in the broadest, most archetypal knee-jerk sentiments -- small town memories, good hearted women who save ne'er-do-well boyfriends, outlaw wanderlust, etc. The most shameless song on here is "What A Memory," in which Mama's dying wish is that her boy should get a guitar, so he can follow his dreams as a musician... well, you see where this is headed... Still, slick as he is, Tracy Lawrence is a pretty listenable Top 40 artist... Worth checking out.

I saw Tracy Lawrence in concert a few weeks ago, and was very impressed with his performance. Afterwards, I decided that I would pick up this album, which he said was his new release. I must say, this is the real deal when it comes to country music, and a much needed change with the music being played on country radio these days. My personal favorites are "Hard to be an Outlaw, What a Memory, and Meant to Be." This is one of those cd's that you can play over and over and never get tired of.

Country Superstar Tracy Lawrence has a gem with this cd. It's close to an hour of everything from feel-good country to feeling the heartache that Mr. Lawrence expresses in a couple of these songs. "Life Don't Have to be so Hard," Getting Back Up, Crawlin' Again, and What a Memory" could all very easily take Tracy to the top. This is definitely one of the best cd's of 2002.
