Book Description

1967
From back cover: "The young man is Tracy. The girl's anem is Laura. And the tiger is called (naturally) Tracy's Tiger. When Tracy came to New York to work in Otto Seyfang's wholesale coffee business, he didn't intend to spend the rest of his life moving sacks. And when Laura met Tracy at the luncheonette, she didn't expect to fall in love. And when Dr. Pingitzer the analyst talked to Tracy about this...this, tiger, nobody thought it was real. But pretty soon Tracy's Tiger was running up Madison Avenue with an armored car and cops in pursuit, the newspapers were trying to get an interview with Tracy, Tracy was looking for Laura -- and after that, New York was never quite the same!

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple, beautiful allegory, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Tracy's Tiger (Paperback)
I stumbled upon this moving little book completely by accident -- a happy accident, as it turns out. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that it's a story about a young man in love, striving to make his way through the modern world, encountering a few modern obstacles along the road. And while the book now over 50 years old, the basic message is just as true & meaningful as ever, particularly for all those who don't quite fit in (and don't want to). It won't be for every reader, of course -- some will find it too whimsical, or they'll let contemporary glibness & irony be an unfeeling glass sheet between themselves & the story. But if you're willing to give yourself over to it, you're in for a memorable journey, one that will stay with you after turning the last pages.

The novella itself is out of print, but it can also be found in "The William Saroyan Reader." Here's hoping it'll be reprinted on its own eventually, because there's definitely an audience for it, if they only knew that it exists. And since it was turned into a two-act musical in 2007, who knows? Recommended!
