About the Artist

Colcannon has developed a distinctive, inventive, and contemporary musical style while still keeping in firm touch with the heart and essence of traditional Irish music. Colcannon’s concerts are renowned for their energy, for singer/frontman Mick Bolger’s irrepressible sense of humor and sly wit, and, of course, for the music; music that expresses flights of joy, deep sorrows, and an unquenchable zest for life. The band formed in 1984 in Boulder Colorado, USA, and their reputation has grown steadily over the years with the release of six fine CDs on the Oxford Road Records label. The group's first three albums were produced by bluegrass/folk legend Tim O'Brien, and their most recent release, Corvus, spent three months in the Top Ten on the National Celtic Radio Charts in the U.S. The Emmy®-award winning PBS special, "Colcannon in Concert," filmed at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in 1993, has aired nationwide. Colcannon has also been part of many collaborative projects- they were featured on John McEuen's soundtrack for the television mini-series "The Wild West", as well as on the Western Heritage Award winning album of the same name and The Nashville Network Television special "The Music of the Wild West". Recently, the group has provided music for an audio project "Secrets of the World- The Good People" featuring Irish master storyteller and folklorist Eddie Lenihan. Other recent projects include the development of 'Lusanna' a work for Colcannon and chamber orchestra, written by Colcannon bassist Mike Fitzmaurice, with text and lyrics in Irish and English by vocalist Mick Bolger. 'Lusanna' will premiere in the fall of 2002. Earlier collaborations with orchestra featured Fitzmaurice's 'The Red Kite', a three movement concerto for Colcannon and orchestra, as well as symphonic arrangements of some of Colcannon's original compositions. Colcannon’s appeal crosses lines of age, gender and ethnic background; For while the musical focus is on the beautiful wealth of traditional Irish music- all acoustic instrumentation, traditional as well as original tunes and songs, with some of the songs in Mick’s native Irish language- Colcannon’s true message is the story of the resilient and joyous human spirit.

Mick Bolger-vocals, bodhran;
Mike Fitzmaurice- acoustic bass, guitars;
Rod Garnett, flutes;
Jean Bolger- fiddle;
Brian Mullins- mandolin, bouzouki, guitar, flute.

Product Description

This is an album of all traditional music and songs. There was no particular notion of returning to ‘our roots’ -- those roots are too many and varied to be gone back to easily. We just found ourselves playing and learning these songs and tunes from each other when we had down time on the road or were just hanging out and enjoying each other’s company. Some came from books, some from sessions and friends. Many of the songs have been favorites for a long time -- in a couple of cases since childhood. A few of the tunes are warhorses of the traditional repertoire -- others are more obscure.

Our interpretations may not be ‘fierce traditional’ but neither have we tried to impose some preconceived stylistic gloss: we just played them as they seemed to us to want to be played.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing evening! (Winnemucca, NV), March 17, 2006
By
This review is from: Trad. (Audio CD)
I bought this CD and also the Crovus CD while at their concert in Winnemucca, NV. These CD's are a MUST HAVE! I must say they are an absolutely marvelous acustic adventure. What a grand evening it was! Traditional Irish music, their own compositions, charming humor & stories, multi-talented group. Flutes, Fife, Bass Harmonicia, Mandolin, Fiddle, acustic Guitar, upright Bass. I could go on. Thank you for the awesome "filling my senses" music. Grand-simply Grand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best acoustic Celtic music!, December 12, 2003

This review is from: Trad. (Audio CD)
I've listened to Colcannon for years. They regularly tour through Wyoming. I never miss an opportunity to catch a show. Trad is an excellent example of this very fine group's Celtic flair.
