This key holder is a very creative idea, and it works pretty well on some cars. However, it is much thicker than it really needs to be, and so it blocks the license plate light on some models. That is, of course, illegal - if you block the license plate light, you may be stopped and given a ticket.

Good idea, but it needs some help to be effective. The design uses a combination of plastic friction binding and the spring-loaded license plate to hold the "key-compartment door" closed to "secure" the spare key. However, if you install the device on a hatch-back door, and you must slam the hatch closed, the key compartment may "flop open", dislodging the key from inside. I overcame this issue by using two pieces of velcro- one to the head of the key and the other to the inside of the key box. In this way, the key does not come loose when slamming the hatch back closed and allows the owner to lift the license plate and re-close the key compartment without having to search beneath the vehicle for the dropped key. Sometimes a bit annoying, but still effective. Overall, this is a good idea that could be improved upon if the designers had used an additional safeguard to positively "latch" the key compartment closed to avoid such an accident. The second issue I have is that if your license plate is secured by sheet metal screws at the bottom rather than at the top of the license plate, the installation will not work well. Still, it is a good little product for hiding a spare key on the outside of your vehicle "just in case".
